WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🏏 Three Ottawa restaurants have received permission to serve alcohol early this coming Sunday morning in anticipation of watching Team Canada’s gold medal match against Finland. The restos are:
- Lowertown Brew Pub on York Street
- Pubblico Eatery on Wellington Street West
- Boston Pizza Barrhaven on Greenbank Road
The pint and the puck both drop at 8:00 am. – Josh Pringle at CTV
🏏 To avoid a sticky wicket, the City wants your opinion on building a new cricket pitch. The City is proposing a full-size, 100-metre by 125-metre pitch at Beryl Gaffney Park on Rideau Valley Drive. Rideau-Jock ward councillor David Brown says ‘cricket is one of the fastest growing sports in Ottawa’. The City’s Engage Ottawa page is asking for your opinion here. – Ted Raymond at CTV
🐿️ Mayor Mark Sutcliffe unveiled the City’s vision for ByWard Market at the Downtown Ottawa Forum yesterday. Plans include:
- Rejigging the ByWard Market Building into a ‘modern space with food-focused tenants’.
- Building underground parking to replace the 70 Clarence Street parkade and change the parkade into a ‘destination hub’.
- Change York Street into ‘a big plaza that could host family events, cultural programming, winter activities, and major events’. – Marissa Galko in the Ottawa Business Journal
↪ The 70 Clarence Street parkade will immediately change to three hour maximum parking in a bid to ‘encourage turnover’ in the area that the City desires to promote as a destination.
🛷 The Green Eggs and Hammers ultimate frisbee team have serious spirit. The Green Eggs and Hammers flew to the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics to cheer on their ultimate frisbee teammates Mike Evelyn O’Higgins and Jay Dearborn in person. O'Higgins and Dearborn competed in two-man bobsleigh last weekend, coming in 23rd. – Keiran Gorsky in the Ottawa Sports Pages
🗳️ Tobi Nussbaum, the chief executive of the National Capital Commission, participated in a Q & A about his Capital favourites. His ‘best kept secret’ is the ‘walk to the Chaudière Falls viewing area via the bulkheads behind the War Museum and along NCC’s Pangishimo Park’. – Marissa Galko in the Ottawa Business Journal

THE DAILY POLL
What’s your opinion on cricket?
🔘 It’s great fun to watch
🔘 It’s great fun to play
🔘 I could not have less interest in it even if Jim Watson was a player
🔘 I’ve watched it and I think that it is a made up game like "Calvinball" or "Mornington Crescent"
🔘 Buddy Holly’s band was one of the greats. I don’t know what bats and balls have to do with it.

Previously in ottawan polls: -
We asked, ‘Do we need a bylaw to ban feeding wildlife?’
-
66% If it’s problem, a public information campaign would be far more effective
-
11% Smarter-than-average bears stealing picnic baskets in our parks is a growing problem
-
Commentary
▪️ “Many of those animals are smarter than many of our politicians!”
▪️ “If you don't feed the squirrels and chipmunks, what are the coyotes going to eat?”
▪️ “The city can't even enforce the by-laws it has now without adding more.”
▪️ “We need enforcers though : May I suggest, Canadian Geese in cute little ‘ICE’ styled uniforms?”
▪️ “This is a ridiculous waste of energy and city resources. If there is a specific issue / area, then deal with it!”
▪️ “If people want to feed squirrels and chipmunks, let them. Most larger wildlife wouldn't be in the city limits if we’d stop developing their habitats.”
▪️ “There are persistent squirrel feeders in my ’hood, older folk, not well-off. I presume the animals are friends to them, and that a law would result in fines that will be hardships but not deterrent. Education takes time but in the long run more effective.”
▪️ “With housing encroaching evermore on wildlife habitats, we see sightings of bears, coyotes, etc more frequently. Idiots need to be spoonfed rules to keep them safe from themselves.”
▪️ “Naturally, bird feeders attract squirrels, chipmunks, and whatever picks up ground scraps like rabbits, and mice.”
▪️ “Wildlife is simply trying to survive as we (people) keep taking over more and more of their space. Leave the animals alone. They were here long before us and they are part of the wildlife that we, in the suburbs, enjoy so much.”
▪️ “Oh for the love of God! So ridiculous! We have taken over their habitat and now you want to starve them! So fed up with this city’s councillors.”
▪️ “I constantly see ignorant people feeding chipmunks, squirrels, geese bread etc. which is terrible for them but obviously they don’t realize this so there needs to be a ban. Now enforcing it is a whole other ballgame.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
Stereotyping people is bad, unless you are poking gentle fun of Ottawa neighbourhoods and the folks who live in them. Diana Gheorma anthropomorphizes the neighbourhoods of Barrhaven, ByWard Market, Centretown, the Glebe, Hintonburg, Kanata, Old Ottawa South, Orléans, and Westboro.
