Hello Ottawa
In Today’s Edition
→ After 15 years, the Brass Monkey nightclub has closed
→ You’ve heard of hot yoga, but how about wet yoga in the indoor tropical water garden at Aquatopia tomorrow. (You don’t actually go into the water)
→ The Deal of the Day is a mystery box from Blondie Apparel
Update
Luke LeBrun in PressProgress has taken issue with the organization that proclaimed Ottawa as North America’s most livable city, as mentioned in THE OTTAWAN yesterday.
LeBrun says the data is user generated from a ‘dubious Eastern European website’ that has a ‘residential apartment building in Belgrade as its headquarters’.
While we have no issue with PressProgress’ investigation, THE OTTAWAN’s position is that so-called Best Neighbourhood/Most Romantic Restaurant/Rattiest City studies all must be taken with a grain of salt. They’re fun diversions but our best and brightest scientists are not actually using quantum computers to determine which location has the best view.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🎸 After 15 years, the Brass Monkey nightclub has closed. The owner blames a downturn in the number of patrons for his troubles but says the knockout blow was the demand for a $20,000 deposit from the new strip mall landlord to guarantee rent. – Lynn Saxberg in the Ottawa Citizen
🧻 Somerset Street at Bank Street will be getting a new public privy. The new public washrooms will not be one of those fancy self-cleaning systems but an old-fashioned toilet in a building, maintained by City staff. The City was worried that a self-cleaning system might freeze in the winter. – Leah Larocque at CTV
📋 Round-up of things on which to write, nominate, or vote.• The Ottawa Business Journal is seeking nominations for its annual Forty under 40 awards. Deadline is March 7.
• Inside Ottawa Valley has published the nominations for the Ottawa Valley Readers Choice Awards. Like we say about our own Best of Ottawa Awards, the biggest value of the list is to discover businesses that you have not heard of before. We found many like that in these nominations. Vote here.
• The Ottawa Public Libray is seeking young writers, aged 9 to 18, to enter the Awesome Authors Youth Writing Contest. The categories are: short story, poetry, comic, nouvelle, poésie, and bande dessinée.

Commentary
▪️ “It’s cool Ottawa ranked number 1. But if you take everything in Ottawa that is federal you’d be left with a grey and uninspiring city with no vision or spark. We are number 1 because of the feds not municipal actions.”
▪️ “It is better for some Canadians ... but not for some Indigenous people who still do NOT have proper water and other issues!”
▪️ “The winter knocks us out of first place as far as I am concerned.”
▪️ “Whoever did the rankings hasn’t been in Ottawa in winter nor have they had to use OC Transpo and the LRT!
▪️ “I’m an immigrant and still in love with Ottawa after seven years living here. It’s got everything one can wish for and people are truly amazing.”
▪️ “Ottawa and Tampa are both very dear to my heart. How great, then, that Canada’s very own Porter Airlines connects non-stop at this time of year. The best of both worlds!”
▪️ “All things considered, there is no city I've been to in North America where I’d rather live.”
▪️ “It’s not a bad place to live. But I’m surprised by the health care score, given how few of us have access to primary care.”
▪️ “Ottawa is great, we do have our problems, think LRT and Landsdowne but overall it is a wonderful city. We still have that small town feel, and many amazing people and places.”
▪️ “Yes, it’s safe to live in Ottawa. It's clean and welcoming. I only wish that the winters weren't so long and cold, but you can't have everything eh.”
▪️ “I have travelled all over the world and love coming back to our beautiful city with its entertainment venues, river paths and canal!”
▪️ “Can’t think of any other city I’d rather live in (certainly not anywhere in Florida!), so by default that makes Ottawa the best for me!”
▪️ “I think you need a working transit system + walkable neighbourhoods to have the best quality of life.”
▪️ “There is always room for improvement but I think we've got it made pretty good here in our big little city.”
▪️ “We’re number 1!!!”
▪️ “I've lived in 12 North American cities. I’m tied for the most comfortable financial time of my life living here. Politically, Ottawa is better. Having lived in many places, there are definitely way worse places to live and not many better.”
▪️ “I have lived in 7 cities in Canada, and 2 in the US, and Ottawa is not in my top 8. Has things to do, but you can’t change Dr’s, you can't find a cop in Lowertown / downtown.”
▪️ “Great city, but not the best given that we have the worst public transit system.”
▪️ “The water is clean, there is lots of park space, the schools are decent. The fact that it is kind of poky and boring suggests that, yes, life quality is probably decent for most.”
▪️ “We’re not the very best at anything but very very good across many dimensions.”
