WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚊 Don’t forget, all transit is free this weekend. OC Transpo is offering the free weekend as a semi-apology for the poor transit and cancelled trains the agency has run this year. Free fares start at 3:00 am Saturday and run until last service on Sunday night.

On Saturday, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, passengers can tour the Line 1 station-in-waiting, Place d’Orléans.

On Sunday, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, Hurdman Station is having a showcase with undefined ‘fun activities’ and tours of OC Transpo’s newest vehicles.

OC Transpo would like to remind you that it cannot turn off the card readers on the buses, so don’t tap your Presto or bank cards because you will be charged.

As usual, ParaTranspo riders still are barred from doing anything spontaneously and must book their rides the day before. – City of Ottawa

⚕️ The Ottawa Hospital slashes its health care worker cuts from 400 to 17. The hospital announced last April that it would be cutting 400 health care workers in a budget-cutting move. However, this week it was announced that due to early retirements and freezing vacant positions, only 17 health care workers will be fired. – Sabrina Bedford in the Ottawa Citizen

🚸 Two hundred parents call for a crossing guard at the corner of Charing Road and Bertona Road. The street is a popular route for students at St John XXIII Catholic School and Manordale Public School, and where parents say there have been many close calls with traffic. Ottawa, like all Ontario cities, is prohibited from creating a crosswalk on its own and must complete a study using the ‘Pedestrian Crossover Warrant Matrix test’ before painting the lines.  – Abyssinia Abebe in the Ottawa Citizen

🗳️ Ottawa Civic Election

  • ‘Alex Lawson pledges to end vacant unit tax at first council meeting if elected mayor of Ottawa’ – Ted Raymond at CTV
  • ‘Neil Saravanamuttoo talks defence, tech, housing and revitalization’  – Mia Jensen in the Ottawa Business Journal

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

In the University of Ottawa students’ newspaper The Fulcrum, Trevor Ng tries to work out why the University has left around 42 residential properties in Sandy Hill vacant.

Of the houses along King Edward Avenue, Henderson Avenue, and Templeton Street, a previous plan was to raze them and redevelop the area, but now a spokesperson says ‘[n]o final decisions have been made regarding specific properties or redevelopment initiatives’.
