STATISTICS OTTAWA

NUMBER

  • 1987

  • – The year that Ron Klicka parked his car near a train station in Guelph. Last month, now living in Jasper (the one near Perth),  he received  a ‘final notice’ from Guelph for a parking ticket fine and a warning it could increase.

  • Klicka says he doesn’t remember ever receiving a ticket, nor has it ever come up in his driver’s licence renewals, but he paid the $24.50 plus $10 late fee just to be sure.

  • Kate Bueckert at CBC

OTTAWAN OF THE DAY

  • Maggie Glossup

  • – Dubbed the ‘Bear Lady’, Glossup has been sculpting bears made out of snow and placing them along stumps and tree along the Kichi Sibi Winter Trail.

  • ‘Instead of signing up for a gym to go and get exercise, I’m over in the woods almost every day,’ the 78 year-old says.

  • – Peter Szperling at CP24   (Pics, of course)

QUOTE

  • What if we razed downtown Ottawa and returned it to nature, as Étienne Brûlé found it? Or just abandoned it to the elements? Maybe everything west of Elgin, east of Lyon and north of Gloucester?

– Chris Selley in the National Post making fun of the unions and politicians who oppose the Federal employee return-to-office mandates.

β†ͺ In an email,  the Treasury Board of Canada told Radio Canada that ‘there may not be enough workstations at some locations to meet the four-day work week requirement for all staff starting July 6’.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL

Community Services Committee
Tuesday, February 24 at 9:30 pm

Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🍻 The former Royal Canadian Air Force mess hall onΒ Gloucester Street has received heritage status over the Department of National Defence’s objection. The hall was built in 1919 by well-known architect Robert Holmes for the Orange Order, and later bought by the Air Force for use as an officer’s mess hall. The Department’s objection over heritage status was both because, as a Federal building, it should not be subject to municipal rules and because the Department had let it deteriorate to such an extent that it was no longer usable.   – Josefine Lukaszek at Capital Current

πŸ†˜ A new agency to oversee homeless and addictions services is being discussed by a City committee today. City staff have recommended to the City’s community services committee that Ottawa’s community and social services department be combined with the Ottawa Police Service’s community outreach initiatives. Somerset ward councillor Ariel Troster says that under the current system, ‘the same person might be helped by five different agencies’ in the same day.  – Cameron Mahler at CBC

🎭 If you’re looking for a volunteer job with no strings attached, these positions are not for you. The biennial Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival is seeking a vice chair of the board and a communication lead for the popular event in Almonte August 8 and 9. Details are here.  – Facebook

πŸ—³οΈ City Hall Election 2026

• Assumed mayoral candidate Neil Saravanamuttoo has a message on how he would create a ‘City Hall that puts residents first’.

• Joanne Chianello discusses why she wants to be Kitchissippi’s next city councillor.

• Stittsville ward councillor Glen Gower posted on Saturday, ‘[w]hen I first ran eight years ago ... I said I would only serve two terms’. He’s keeping his word and won’t run again this year, after his second term ends.

THE OTTAWAN treats all candidates equally, regardless of political outlook. If you see an interview or statement by someone running for office that we have missed, please let us know at ‘hello@theottawan.com’.

THE DAILY POLL

If a part of Ottawa must be returned to nature, what should it be?

πŸ”˜ Ottawa’s historic centre

πŸ”˜ Everything beyond Ottawa’s historic centre

πŸ”˜ The whole thing

πŸ”˜ Every second street running north/south, every third street running east/west. Curvy streets will be decided by a coin flip by either Alanis Morrissette or Sandra Oh

πŸ”˜ Properties owned by people who cannot correctly pronounce the names of Dalhousie, Somerset, and the region of North Gower

  • Previously in ottawan polls:

  • We asked, ‘What’s your opinion on cricket?’

    • 8% It’s great fun to watch

    • 8% It’s great fun to play

    • 39% I could not have less interest in it even if Jim Watson was a player

    • 18% I’ve watched it and I think that it is a made up game like ‘Calvinball’ or ‘Mornington Crescent’

    • 27% Buddy Holly’s band was one of the greats. I don’t know what bats and balls have to do with it

      Commentary

β–ͺ️ I like sports but have never watched and never played – if there is an appetite for this in the City, then who am I to say it should or should not be built.

β–ͺ️ I don’t understand the game in the slightest, but it’s super fun and exciting to watch!

β–ͺ️ It’s great fun to watch AND play.

β–ͺ️ Regular length matches can be a bit much but check out T20 matches; shorter and more intense.

β–ͺ️ Not my cup of tea.

β–ͺ️ Jiminy ...

β–ͺ️ Confusing as hell!

β–ͺ️ A great game.

β–ͺ️ Cricket is like a very popular religion in India and almost as popular in the West Indies.

β–ͺ️ Peggy Sue and me.

β–ͺ️ There’s nothing better than a game that can take five whole days and still end in a draw, in which the players stop for lunch and afternoon drinks and all while the spectators snooze or read the paper. Very civilized!
