WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

😷 Four hundred jobs are being cut at the Ottawa Hospital to address ‘financial challenges’. This works out to be about three per cent of the hospital’s staff. The Hospital says that it will try to use options like early retirement and removing vacant jobs to avoid layoffs.  – Elizabeth Payne in the Ottawa Citizen

↪ Gatineau’s new hospital, to be located on the former Asticou Centre, will begin construction next year

🎧 The latest edition of the City’s podcast, Ottatalk, has dropped. The first edition of season two is ‘Will there be spring flooding this year?’ – Ottatalk

🚗 Online used car dealer Clutch has opened a storefront in the Bayshore Shopping CentreThe Clutch service for most people is completely online: you buy, sell, and transfer money online and at some point a truck picks up or drops off your car. This location will let buyers and sellers to pick up or drop off their vehicle. – BusinessWire

    •
      Commentary

▪️ “If nobody better comes along, sure.”

▪️ “Theresa Kavanaugh’s office has always been super responsive and usually resolve my concerns quickly. Honestly, she does so much for our community and shows up at most events (no I don’t know her or work for her outside of living in the Bay ward).”

▪️ “I do know who my councillor is, but I don't think he knows we are part of his ward. Never seen or heard a peep from him.”

▪️ “I think it’s time for a bit of an overhaul of City Council members.”

▪️ “Menard is clueless and a piss poor bully. He needs to do his research before jumping to his false conclusions.”

▪️ “I certainly will not vote for Sean Devine, didn’t in the last election. He is fixated on raising taxes and forcing people to use our nonexistent/broken transportation system.”

▪️ “I do not support drunk driving. Luloff should have resigned.”

▪️ “This answer is given, of course, when we don't know who else will be running and what issues Ottawa residents want to focus on as priorities over the next four years.”

▪️ “Riley Brockington is excellent!”

▪️ “Our Councillor for Centretown seemingly spends most of her time focused on the unhoused and addiction treatment and not on the residents and businesses that are essential to a well functioning society.”

▪️ “Jessica has done a good job and deserves to continue in her role.”

▪️ “I can’t wait to vote for someone more progressive that what Rideau-Vanier got stuck with.”

▪️ “Dear Tim, 5500 is not enough!”

▪️ “I rarely plump for a politician but I find Rawlson King to be a good and fair representative.”

▪️ “Sometimes I think my ward should be broken up, my councillor is a bit overworked.”

▪️ “Mine is intensely focused on very local issues, especially aggressive lobbying by local businesses, and neglects councillors’ obligation to improve City-wide services like transit and address broader issues like homelessness and public health.”

▪️ “Laine Johnson is a wonderful councillor! Will definitely vote for her again!”

JUST ANNOUNCED

  • For a certain percentage of THE OTTAWAN’s readership, to hear that Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life is 50 is a bit disconcerting. Get over that and book your ticket to the Blind Boys of Alabama, who will sing the classic album at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre next Tuesday April 14. You'll feel even better when you learn that the concert is also a fundraiser for the Ottawa Jazz Festival.

  • Combine a Saturday theatre date at GCTC’s Jade Circle with a chance to get your hands dirty. Hintonburg Pottery presents the Candle Holder Hand Building Workshop from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Saturday May 9. You can either buy a ticket to the matinée and then play in the clay, or take the workshop first and then go to the evening performance.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

An intricately carved chair has been donated to the Museum of War.

Using genealogical records, the chair is belived to have been carved in 1915 by Sirghi Sofian  who was detained at the Spirit Lake internment camp, north of  Montréal, along with his wife and three children.

Many Eastern European immigrants were detained in camps during the First World War by a Canadian government that considered them enemy aliens.

The chair was donated by a woman in Delta, BC who inherited it from her Ottawa grandfather. She has no idea where he got it from.

The CBC has a very interesting page on how it tracked down the artist.
