Commentary
▪️ “I also program it fairly conservatively (the only area of life in which I am conservative, I suppose–because we are talking here of conservation). So, even once the thermostat is set in mid-October, the heat isn't automatically on ...”
▪️ “I’m a delicate hot house flower... But I also have a husband who insists the house should be below 21°C.”
▪️ “Maybe not until below zero but I do wait until it gets cold as I hate the dryness in the house from the forced air and to reduce our carbon footprint.”
▪️ “Only when indoor temperature goes below 18. I keep window cracked open most of the winter also.”
▪️ “Brrrr!”
▪️ “Only once thus far and only long enough to remove the overnight chill from the air ...”
▪️ “I’m still using Air Conditioning.”
▪️ “Apartment buildings are mandated by law not temperature when to turn on (and in spring off) the heat. Some years we really do get chilly.”
▪️ “Come to Florida! It’s still toasty down here!”
▪️ “Up until about six years ago, my neighbour and I, who both lived in semi detached houses, used to see who could get as close to Christmas without turning on the heat. We usually gave up about the same time but I remember our annual contest fondly.”
▪️ “I’d rather be cold than hot. I’ll put on a sweater. We sleep with the windows open 12 months of the year.”
▪️ “I’ve insulated my condo so well that AC stays on until the building turns if off near end of Sept. Heat won’t be flipped on until mid-Nov depending on weather!”
▪️ “We keep our house at a comfy 21-22°c. That means alternating heat and AC during this seasonal transition. Basement would be too cold and upstairs too hot otherwise.”
▪️ “5c outside is my cutoff.”
▪️ “October... Below zero... We turn on the heat when it needs turning on, whether that’s September or May. It’s not on yet this year.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
Gary Dimmock in the Ottawa Citizen has waded through the muck of municipal speed cameras and come up with some home truths.
- Ottawa’s 60 cameras brought in $29 million in 2024
- Speeding has been reduced by 14 per cent, says the City
- The City is prohibited by law from using the money collected by speed camera fines for anything other than road safety. Despite Premier Doug Ford’s statement that camera are a cash grab, the City cannot use the money as general revenue.
- US company Verra Mobility is paid $72,000 for each camera
- The City says that obedience to speed limits has risen from 16 per cent in 2020 to 87 per cent now.
- It’s not a speed camera, but in 1965 the first red-light camera was introduced in the Netherlands. They called it a Gatsometer.
