WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL
No more meetings this year

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
⛪ An unused 120 year-old church in the Outaouais has been saved for use as a cultural centre. Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue closed in 2022 after parishioners could no longer pay for needed repairs. As part of the deconsecration process, some statues, tableaus, and artwork will be buried in the adjacent cemetery. However, the pipe organ – possibly the oldest in the Outaouais – will remain. – Liam Baker at CBC
♻️ Don’t forget, the curbside recycling system changes on Friday. Under new Provincial rules, the City will no longer collect recycling items but instead will rely on the recycling industry to do it. In Ottawa, Miller Waste has been contracted to do the work.
Your recycling day and alternate week schedule doesn’t change but, now that the recycling industry has to do it, they are being stricter about what can be put in the boxes.
For example, no books or bottles that have deposit paid on them. However, plastic bags, chip bags, bubble wrap, meat trays, takeout containers and cups, toothpaste tubes, deodorant, and hand cream tubes are all in now. – City of Ottawa
🎧 The latest Better Ottawa podcast has been released. This time, Neil Saravanamuttoo, Joanne Chianello, and Jon Willing discuss the best and worst decisions by City Hall in 2025. – The 613
↪ Similarly, on his City of Ottawa Politics Substack, Evan Harold Potter reveals his biggest political wins and losses, overperformers and underperformers, rising stars, council member of the year, predictions but not endorsements, and the biggest political stories in 2026.
↪ Not to be left out, Brigitte Pellerin in the Ottawa Citizen ranks the ‘most annoying stories in Ottawa from 2025’.

Commentary
▪️ “Ever since my wife and I married 42 years ago, we’ve celebrated two Christmases (she’s of Ukrainian heritage) and so we actually went even farther than Epiphany — to traditional Ukrainian new years on Jan.14.”
▪️ “That’s a good day to pack up decorations and put the tree outside.”
▪️ “Epiphany is probably technically correct, but the first working day after new years feels like the end.”
▪️ “The 12 Days of Christmas is from Christmas Eve to the Epiphany Jan 6.”
▪️ “The season ends only after the bean in the King’s cake designates the Queen. Then, that’s it for sweets for a bit!”
▪️ “We keep the tree up and lights burning until January 6th — the twelve days of Christmas and all that. But, increasingly feel out step with the rest of the world.”
▪️ “Not to mention those who celebrate Christmas on January 7!”
