WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL

The Committee of Adjustment meets at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.

Agenda

Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? Columbia

City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🍽️ The City will launch an advertising campagn next month to encourage Federal employees to hang around downtown after work. The $160,000 campaign is intended to encourage workers to spend some time downtown, maybe having a nosh and catching a show. The campaign will also advise of new routes and park and ride options.– Ben Andrews in the Ottawa Citizen

⚜️ The City of Gatineau has quietly reinstalled a statue of Samuel de Champlain in the parc de la Francophonie. The statue was originally sited at the intersection of promenade du Portage and rue Laval in 2004 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first French settlement in North America (Saint Croix Island in what is now New Brunswick). The statue was put in storage in 2016 because of road construction and hadn’t been seen since. – CBC

⛳ Three community groups want the City to buy the Kanata Golf and Country Club to prevent the latter from developing housing on its land.
The Kanata Lakes Community Association, the Kanata Greenspace Protection Coalition, and the Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association have sent a proposal to the City that calls on it to buy the 173 acre golf club and turn it into an urban park. The owner of the Club is planning to build 1,500 houses on its land. – Josh Pringle at CTV

✈️ WestJet will offer weekly direct flights to Costa Rica starting December. The flights will be between YOW and Liberia (obviously the city in Costa Rica and not the country in Africa) every Sunday. Porter Airlines flew the same route last winter and intends to do the same again this year. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🗳️ Ottawa Civic Election

‘Brigitte Pellerin to Mark Sutcliffe: “Fix Your Email”’ – Evan Harold Potter at City of Ottawa Politics

‘Mayoral candidate Alex Lawson is ready to deliver results’ – Sydney Ko in Compass Ottawa

THE DAILY POLL

How enthused are you about the upcoming election?

🔘 Very! I want to reiterate my support of the incumbents and the good job that they are doing

🔘 Very! I am motivated to throw the bums out

🔘 Say hi to the new boss, same as the old boss. Won’t get fooled again.

🔘 Like every normal person, I won't start paying attention until about a month before

🔘 I resent voting for representatives and think everyone should be able to vote online for each item on City Council agendas. (Except for Committee of Adjustment – it’s too much of a party in person to skip)

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Who will win the FIFA World Cup Sunday?

    • 35% Argentina

    • 12% Spain

    • 14% It doesn’t matter, as long as all the players have fun

    • 30% I could not care less

    • 9% The OTTAWAN watched the film The Vault this week, in which Spain playing in the World Cup was a diversion to rob the Bank of Spain. This seems like another heist

    • Commentary

▪️ “I would have liked to see another team win, but to be fair this Argentina team is spectular in their passing and playmaking. Let’s go Spain!”

▪️ “I think Messi is their saviour so it’s hard to beat them.”

▪️ “I cheered for Canada while they were in the tournament but after they were eliminated I was done. Not a real sports fan but I do support my Country.”

▪️ “My Favourite To Win Argentina.”

▪️ “Depends which country paid FIFA the biggest bribe.”

▪️ “Don’t care. All I want now is for Plymouth Argyle to get promoted. Come on you Greens!”

▪️ “Messi is the GOAT and will score the winning goal!”

▪️ “Spain should win cause we don’t want things to get Messi!”

▪️ “Don’t Cry For Me ... you must win!”

▪️ “If FIFA allows Argentina to lose ...”
