WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

📆 City of Ottawa workers have been ordered back to the office five days per week. City manager Wendy Stephanson made the announcement in a memo to senior staff and council members today. City employees have a slight reprieve however – the order doesn’t go into effect until January 1.  – Aidan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen

🚴 Another cyclist is leaving team Israel-Premier Tech, this time it’s Derek Gee whose says it is over a contract dispute. We mentioned the other day that fellow Ottawa native Mike Woods was retiring after 11 years in racing. Woods is also currently with team Israel-Premier Tech. The details of the dispute are not yet public but the Team says Gee is still a member. Matt Hansen in Canadian Cycling Magazine

♻️ Kids are being asked to bring home their plastics, glass and metal because the schools are dumping recycling binsThe Ottawa Catholic School Board and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board have cancelled their contracts with recycling companies and expect their students and staff to bring their recyclables back home and bin it there. Josh Pringle at CTV

THE DAILY POLL

Should the kids be bringing their recycling home from school?

Yes, they brought it there they can bring it back

No, all our public facilities should be recycling

If you only feed your kids junk food, they don‘t need to bring anything back

It’ll be the board staff’s laundry next

  • Previously in ottawan polls:

  • We asked, ‘Should Ottawa Police arrest protestors who block public events from happening?

    • 50%  Yes, they can have their moment but when they are told to go, they make a choice

    • 24%  No, as long as no one is at risk, their Charter right to protest is guaranteed

    • 2%  Yes, but only if I don’t agree with the protestors’ position

    • 24% No, that puts the decision as to who is worthy to protest and who is not, on the police

  • Commentary

▪️ “The answer speaks for itself.”

▪️ “I fully support Q4P and am still disappointed the parade was cancelled. It’s unfortunate for everyone.”

▪️ “I would add here that while I said yes it’s a qualified one based on whether or not blocking an event from happening means physical intervention by protesters. Peaceful protests that don't interfere with public right of ways are fine.”

▪️ “‘Should police intervene to prevent some people being inconvenienced?’ is a ridiculous question. We have the right to protest and counter-protest. The grand marshal and many parade groups stood with Q4P. Pride is and has always been political!”

▪️ “Pride is a protest, not a corporate PR event. If you think Palestine is a ‘pet issue’ or roll your eyes at the word ‘genocide’ then you are on the wrong side of history. You want an absence of tension, not a presence of justice.”

▪️ “Also please please please reevaluate the comments about who cancelled pride.”

▪️ “Within reason; blocking something like a parade is very different from slowing down, disrupting, etc. Also, input from the public event organizers should be considered, IMO.”

▪️ “Disruptive protests without a permit should not be permitted to stop events that do have a permit. It’s not asking police to decide who can protest. What happens instead if a homophobic or transphobic group decides to stop the parade?”

▪️ “So sad what happened to Pride this year! I think of the folks who maybe this was their first time attending and it got ruined/stopped! Some people are so selfish.”

▪️ “You don’t just get to trample charter rights because you’re annoyed!! Sorry!!! They’re not hurting anyone and they have a right to protest!”

▪️ “The protestors don’t do themselves any favours by ruining events for the greater community. Make your point and then when asked to leave, do so.”

▪️ “As a side note, here’s a statement from Queers 4 Palestine, that tells a slightly different story than the one we've heard so far: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DNwcb2EWi7L/.”

▪️ “You have the right to peaceful protest. No group should be able to stop you, as long as you are not a danger to the public. Even when you don’t like who or what they are protesting or supporting, one must support the right to protest.”
