  • In Ottawa, Italian resto Tosca Ristorante on O’Conner is closing. 99 VIP Seafood Restaurant, which took over the infamous racoon McDonald’s location on Rideau Street has already closed after less than six months.

  • 🥄 If you’ve been missing the Buyers and Cellars Tasting Room since its closure a few months back, you’ll be excited to hear that the new partnership between the Buyers and Cellars team and Anabella’s Kitchen & Lounge on Preston St will rev up soon.

  • 🍷 Beckta’s Villa Calcinaia Wine Dinner will pair six of Count Sebastiano Capponi’s vintages with a special five course meal designed by Chef de Cuisine Lukas Zajicek. Thursday April 30, The Wine Bar at Beckta. (Centretown)

  • 🔥 In the Ottawa Citizen, Peter Hum has found a baker who says that he has achieved ‘Nanaimo Bar perfection’. Adam Cenaiko, who west coaster Darren notes with disdain is from Saskatchewan and not BC, sells them throughout the city and by preorder through Adam Bakes

  • However, Darren also notes with satisfaction that Cenaiko uses Bird’s brand custard powder, as well as the excellent Hummingbird chocolate to prevent cracking in the aforementioned Nanaimo bars. We shall see, Adam Bakes, we shall see.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL

Transit Committee
Thursday, April 9 at 9:30 am

  • Light Rail Regulatory Monitor and Compliance Officer Annual Report for 2025

  • OC Transpo Update – Rail, Bus, and Para Transpo

Agenda

Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? None

City Hall flies the flags of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚌 City Council nixes private bus service in rural areas as it may lead to privatization of OC Transpo. While the agriculture and rural affairs committee approved the idea last week, Council said that it did not know how private industry could provide the service any cheaper. There is no bus service provided at all in rural Ottawa.  – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

🚨 Car owners will soon have an extra week to pay their City of Ottawa parking tickets at a discount. It will take about six months to implement, but the discount period will extend from seven days to 15 days after the ticket is issued.  – Josh Pringle at CTV

📋 The United Counties of Prescott and Russell want the Federal government to provide satellite workspaces outside Ottawa-Gatineau. The return-to-office is imminent, and living in far-flung towns is much less attractive now that commuting hours can add up.  – CBC

⚖️ The woman who admitted selling the fatal ketamine to Matthew Perry has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.  The 42 year-old is the third convicted of five people charged with providing the drug to Perry. Perry attended Rockcliffe Park Public School and Ashbury College as a kid.  – Andrew Dalton in the Associated Press

THE DAILY POLL

Should Canada join the European Union?

🔘 Yes, I’m all for free trade and free movement of people

🔘 No, I don’t want to be forced to have our laws and regulations be EU compliant

🔘 Not sure. Which option is the one that bans curved bananas?

🔘 Only if they rename the Euro to Euroloonie. I will accept Euroonie if there is pushback.

🔘 What kind of question is this, THE OTTAWAN? What’s next? F35 procurement? Atlantic fishing policy? Changing the primogeniture rules of the Japanese throne?

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Writer Jadine Ngan and illustrators Chantal Bennett and Joel Kimmell have published a nice piece in Maclean’s, ‘A Tour of Canada’s Nostalgic Fry Trucks’. While it claims to be pan-Canadian, the article is heavy on chip trucks in our part of the world.
