WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🪩 What should be done with the Belltown Dome and Grandeur Park, asks the City. The Belltown Dome is the iconic, 45 year-old, Buckminster Fuller-eque rink that the City has allowed to decay. The City has some ideas – an outdoor only rink, or an outdoor parkour and obstacle course zone for example – but doesn’t seem keen on rehabilitating the gorgeous dome. The survey is up at Engage Ottawa. – City of Ottawa
↪ The Guy Lafleur Arena in Thurlo has reopened after its roof collapsed last August.
🏺 In a reverse ferret, Greek and Roman honours studies have been uncancelled by the University of Ottawa. The University had received letters from around the world protesting the programme’s suspension. Founded as the College of Bytown in 1848, the University had always previously offered classes in Latin. – CBC
↪ Carleton University has amended its proposed ‘impartiality policy’. The policy seeks to ‘prohibit academic or administrative departments from making statements on political issues and prohibit members of the Carleton community from making statements that could be interpreted as being on behalf of the university’. The amendment clarifies that professors and students are free to be political on their own time, as long as it is clear they are not speaking on behalf of the University.
🚄 The new Federal budget would make it easier to expropriate land for the Alto high speed line between Québec City, Ottawa, and Toronto. While Crown Corporations have always had the power of expropriation, a hearing must be called if there is an objection. The proposed change would allow the Minister to make a decision on whether a hearing is called or not. – Peter Zimonjic at CBC
🚂 Canadian Pacific’s Christmas Train will be visiting nearby tomorrow. Now known as Canadian Pacific Kansas City, the annual decorated train will drop by Finch (2:45 pm - 3:15 pm), Merrickville (5:00 pm - 5:30 pm), Smiths Falls (6:30 pm - 7:00 pm), and Perth (8:00 pm – 8:30 pm). Singers Jade Eagleson and Teigen Gayse will perform at each location. We don’t know if they get to hitch a ride. – CPKCR
🛒 Every week, @stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. This week, he highlights deals on butter ($3.99/lb at IGA), pineapple ($1.99/ea at Super C), and boneless chicken breast ($4.88/lb at Real Canadian Superstore). – /Ottawa

THE DAILY POLL
Do you think Québec City – Ottawa – Toronto high speed rail line will actually happen?
🔘 Yes
🔘 No
🔘 Possibly a very shortened version, at low speed, in the far future
🔘 I expect it to be the first of several across Canada

Commentary
▪️ “Stuff You Should Know is the best.”
▪️ “I get most of my news by podcasts.”
▪️ “I wouldn't even know where to find one!”
▪️ “True crime and history podcasts get me through the worst of Ottawa’s traffic.”
▪️ “I haven’t found a podcast I like yet. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places. I hate how everyone is an « expert » and they just say a lot of words without real substance.”
▪️ “I do enjoy YouTube videos.”
▪️ “I find it overwhelming to choose one to listen to! If someone I like says « hey i think you’d enjoy this podcats episode » and sends me the link, I’ll listen to it. Otherwise, can’t really be bothered.”
▪️ “I particularly recommend ‘Pilgrim’s Podcast’ for all those fellow Plymouth Argyle FC fans out there 💚”
▪️ “I never really understood where podcasts fit in (for me). If I can only listen to something I choose music. For getting information I prefer to read it myself.”
▪️ “My mind wanders when I try to listen to ebooks and podcasts, then I have to rewind. And rewind again. And rewind again. So I don’t listen to them.”
▪️ “Just not tuned in to podcasts. Prefer print media.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
Tyler Fleming at CTV has a nice update on Parliament’s Centre Block renovations. Two interesting tidbits: ‘About 50 “high heritage” spaces will be restored close to their original designs, first imagined by architect John A Pearson after the 1916 fire’ and the Salon de la Francophonie, a Senators’ smoking room in the 1940s, ‘will maintain its cathedral-like design and wooden benches’.
