WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
⛸️ Volunteers are needed to keep outdoor community rinks open. The City supports 270 outdoor rinks, and at least 11 may not open due to a lack of volunteers to maintain the ice. If you’d like to join the 1,000 people who do help out, send an email here Seasonalrecreation@ottawa.ca. – Dave Charbonneau at CTV
↪ 300 skaters are competing in Gatineau right now for Canadian National Skating Championships titles in men’s, women’s, pair, ice dance, and synchronized skating at the Centre Slush Puppie in Gatineau. The championship runs until Sunday, and you can watch the livestream or buy tickets here.
📽️ It may seem counterintuitive right now, but the City is soliciting proposals from groups for the Community-led Greening Initiatives and Gardening Program. Projects sought are ‘community-led food gardens, pollinator and native plant gardens, rain gardens, ornamental gardens, and gardening that reduces the need for irrigation’ or projects that help manage invasive species when connected to a garden or greening project. Deadline is February 3. – City of Ottawa
🛬 Just a reminder that the weather has cancelled or delayed dozens of flights at Ottawa International Airport. If you are departing or expecting someone in the next 24 hours check the flight board here.

Commentary
▪️ “Regular as clockwork and happens every year.”
▪️ “I don’t make formal resolutions, but your poll reminded me to do my Duolingo. My kids challenged me; that’s more motivating!”
▪️ “ie I didn't make one.”
▪️ “I don’t believe in doing New Year resolutions. If I need to make a resolution, I do it anytime of the year, when I need it. Besides, I was fabulous last year and will be fabulous this year :-)”
▪️ “Didn’t even bother this year. Not going to lie to myself or others.”
▪️ “Losing weight. This has been my new year’s resolution for the past two years. Down 125 pounds so far. I am firmly resolved to lose at least 35-40 more in 2026 and meet my goal! I will do it! Check back in 2027 for an update! Belated happy birthday Darren!”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
In the Carleton University students’ newspaper, The Charlatan, Jessica Jagodics tells of how the university replaced an upright grand piano in the common area of the Engineering Design Centre with an electric keyboard.
That the Centre had a piano at all is a story: sometime in the 2010s, engineering students in first year orientation received small items like buttons, paperclips or beans and were encouraged to ‘trade up’ the items as much as possible. Ergo, a stand-up piano was procured.
The University says the piano required maintenance and tuning and the replacement electronic keyboard is a fair compromise.
