City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚊 It could be years before the axels on O Train carriages are fixed, City told. Appearing before the City’s transit committee, maintenance company Rideau Transit Group and carriage builder Alstom said they are in the process of redesigning, testing, and ultimately replacing the axel assemblies on the trains, which would ‘take some time, if not a couple of years, to unfold’.    – Aeden Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen

↪ New OC Transpo general manager Rick Leary says he is going to replace the bus schedules by September. ‘A third of the time you can’t get where you want to go based on our schedule, right? The customer already knows that; this is not new to the customer’, he said.

↪ Is OC Transpo still paying Rideau Transit Group $4 million to $5 million per month even though service is disrupted on O Train Line 1? The City won’t say, citing ongoing ‘commercial issues’.

💊The City should test waste water for drug use, says councillor. Rideau-Vanier ward councillor Stéphanie Plante says drug testing would show how drug use is not limited to downtown, but show how it is ‘moving around the city in real time’. Ottawa Public Health had great success in tracking COVID 19 levels testing wastewater before provincial funding dried up. – Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen

↪ The Ottawa Mission is lobbying to reverse provincial decisions to close supervised drug consumption sites. Two sites in Ottawa, the Somerset West Community Health Centre  and Clarence Street site have already closed. Sites operated by Ottawa Inner City Health and Sandy Hill Community Health Centre are expected to close in June.

⚡ Canada’s only large-format nuclear electromagnetic pulse testing facility has opened in Kanata. The new campus is ‘capable of simulating nuclear EMP conditions, secure storage, purpose-built to support classified projects and inventory with the highest levels of security and compliance’. – BusinessWire

🌊 The City will come and collect your unused sandbags, now that the immediate flood risk is over. The City considers sandbags that have come into contact with water as ‘contaminated’ so it asks that residents put them in separate piles with signs. Collections will be May 20, 24, 27. – City of Ottawa

THE DAILY POLL

What are your plans this long weekend?

🔘 Relax and do nothing at all

🔘 I have a long list of tasks that I can finally get to

🔘 I’m going out: a restaurant, out of town, see friends, etc.

🔘 Nothing whatsoever will change with me, long weekend or not

🔘 I’ll be lying back and thinking of England, wearing nothing but black, and, if I have time, choosing national capitals almost at random

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • We asked ‘How are you feeling about the new OC Transpo general manager?’

    • 7% I feel like he is a go-getter and things are going to turn around

    • 53% I think the new boss is same as the old boss and I won’t get fooled again

    • 21% Anyone who is actually putting more vehicles on the rails rather than removing them gets my support

    • 15% He lucked out. Transit staff have been working on fixing things for months before he got here

    • 4% No leader is serious about transit unless he gives up his or her’s driver’s licence

      Commentary

▪️ “He certainly can’t be any worse (god I hope not) than the last ones we’ve had over the past 5 or so years. Let’s give him some room to turn this mess around. Check back with this same survery in a year from now.”

▪️ “Ottawa, where public transit came to die.”

▪️ “I want a transit manager who can’t drive. Give me someone who has to walk everywhere with a cane.”

▪️ “I’m sure a lot of the work was done before he arrived, but his approach is sound. We will blame him for other leaders’ mistakes, so we should credit him for the victories.”

▪️ “😑”

▪️ “I rode a 2 car train this morning and it was magical to experience a transit system working fully and normally. If only this was every day!”

▪️ “No real timelines and deadlines – same as the old boss. We deserve and need more effective management.”

▪️ “He takes transit everyday to work which a good leader should do. This shows that he's serious about turning things around for OCTranspo. That's my hope anyways.”
