QUOTE

“

  • Right now, a made-in-China product has a 10 per cent tariff. So if I’m selling a $50 product, I pay $5. But if I sell a CUSMA-compliant product, I’m paying $10 to the broker just to certify and have the paperwork that it’s CUSMA compliant

– Ray Kanani, co-owner of Notting Gate-based Good Fortune Puzzle Co. on how having a product covered by the free trade agreement with the US is no guarantee that it won’t be hit with other non-tariff fees

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💸 The City is not ruling out a lawsuit against Ādisōke’s building contractor over costs. The joint Ottawa Public Library / Library and Archives Canada project is a year overdue so far and city council is to consider a request for an additional $11.5 million this week. In a statement, Ottawa’s Director of Infrastructure Services for Special Projects, Bruce Kenny, said ‘Any potential remedies related to the Ādisōke project cannot be shared at this time, as these may include potential legal avenues to recover costs if necessary’.   – Andrew Pinsent at CTV

↪ TD Bank has donated $416,040  in support of the Unlock Potential Campaign at Ādisōke. The Ottawa Public Library will use the funds for groups ‘more likely to experience social isolation’.

🏒 The Ottawa Charge have lost two more players in the Professional Women’s Hockey League expansion draft. Alternate captain Emily Clark has signed with Hamilton, joining captain Brianne Jenner who signed up with the Hammer earlier in the week. Defender Rory Guilday has also been poached, signing with San Jose.

🏵️ Nominations have opened for the Order of Ottawa and Brian Kilrea Award for Excellence in Coaching. The order recognizes significant contributions in arts and culture, business, philanthropy, health care, education, public service, labour, communications and media, science, sports and entertainment and ‘other fields that benefit Ottawa’.

The caveats: ‘Nominations by immediate family members, self-nominations, and posthumous nominations will not be accepted. Elected municipal, provincial, and federal officials are not eligible while in office. Nomination submissions consisting exclusively of volunteer work will not be considered. ’ – City of Ottawa   Order of Ottawa

🚨 Thanks to InterPol, a man wanted for a 2024 homicide in Little Italy was arrested in Türkiye. Gibriil Bakal, who is from Edmonton, was arrested at the Turkish border after a fingerprint check brought up an InterPol ‘red notice’. Ottawa Police had asked InterPol to add Bakal to the list of people trying to evade justice after the fatal shooting of Jama Roble on Champagne Avenue South in January 2024. – CBC

THE DAILY POLL

Are you getting FIFA World Cup fever?

🔘 Yes, and I’m thrilled there are matches in Canada for the first time

🔘 Yes, but I get the feeling that no one else cares

🔘 No, the money and effort could have been spent on better things

🔘 No, I’m just not interested in the sport

🔘 Even the World Cup isn’t enough to entice me to go to Toronto

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Will you be taking part in Doors Open Ottawa this weekend?

    • 45% Yes, I am a huge lookyloo

    • 21% No, I’m not interested in what’s behind closed doors

    • 16% I like the idea, but the place I’d like to see never opens (Write in comments!)

    • 18% What’s really important is to see what is in our heart, and that doesn’t require a ticket

    • Commentary

▪️ “At some point a lot of open doors places switched to tickets only. It used to be only the American embassy needed registration in advance, and now it feels like everywhere does. I just want to wander in and touch stuff. Is that so bad?”

▪️ “What is Doors Open Ottawa?”

▪️ “I chose yes, even though I’ll be out of town. Most unfortunate.”

▪️ “Traffic centre! Was open only one year and by far the coolest doors open but hasn’t happened since.”
