WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⚡ The City has Community information hubs for residents impacted by the Canada Day storm today until 7:00 pm. For the life of us, we don’t understand why this was not announced until this morning – but ‘staff will be onsite to answer questions and provide information on programs, resources and safety’.

The information hubs will be at:

  • Ottawa Public Library - Beaverbrook - 2500 Campeau Drive
  • Ron Kolbus Centre - 102 Greenview Avenue
  • Ottawa Public Library - Centennial - 3877 Old Richmond Road
  • Nepean Sportsplex, Entrance 1 - 1701 Woodroffe Avenue
  • Ottawa Public Library - Emerald Plaza - 1547 Merivale Road

The City’s storm impact webpage is here.  – City of Ottawa

💲 The City’s planning and housing committee approved a renoviction bylaw but few are happy. The problem meant to be solved is landlords intending to relet apartments at current, higher rents by evicting long term tenants, under the guise of renovating the unit. The proposed law requires that the landlord prove a building permit has been obtained before evicting the tenant. Landlords must also provide an information pack of rights and guarantee that the tenants can return at the same rent. Landlord groups complain of paperwork, tenant groups say that compensation for moving and other costs should be provided. The issue now moves to City Council for approval. – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

🏒 The Ottawa Charge will play at the Canadian Tire Centre next season. While it seems like we already knew this, it was only assumed. The Charge had previously announced that it would no longer be playing at the soon-to-be-shrunken TD Arena at Lansdowne. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🛒 Every week, @Stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the bargains on Ottawa Reddit. This week he highlights bacon ($2.99/375g at Metro), potatoes ($2.49/10lb at  No Frills), and olive oil ($7.77/L at Super C) – /Ottawa

THE DAILY POLL

Does Ottawa need a renoviction bylaw?

🔘 Yes, tenants have few protections against landlords who want to evict them and relet at market rate

🔘 No, it’s just more nanny statism. We shouldn’t make it harder for landlords to maintain their property.

🔘 Moving is expensive, once you’re evicted most will not be able to afford to move back after renovations even if it was guaranteed

🔘 Landlords can’t survive if tenants are paying rent that was market rate years and years ago

🔘 Anyone who is evicted should be allowed to store their stuff at 24 Sussex Drive

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

It turns out Brady Tkachuk’s #7 is not the worst jersey number on the Sens.

Steve Warne in The Hockey News has run the stats and found that #17 is the unluckiest number on the team. Nineteen players have worn it and nobody has had long term success afterwards.

‘I’m not saying Ottawa’s No. 17 is cursed. But after exploring its horrors, I'm not ‘not saying’ it either’, writes Warne.
