NUMBER

OTTAWAN OF THE DAY

  • Amelia Derk

  • The Stittsville high school student has made Team Canada in competitive shooting and will represent us at the 2026 F-Class World Championships in Bisley, United Kingdom next August. Last summer, she became the first female and youngest person to win the Ontario F-Class Lieutenant Governor’s Championship (Long Range Aggregate).

  • Leslie McKay in Stittsville Central

QUOTE

  • This step was taken to respond to customer concerns about unreliable trip planning information

– From a memo from OC Transpo to City Councillors explaining that it is cutting 255 bus trips from its daily schedule. Those trips were not actually running but were still on the schedule, confusing and disappointing riders.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

πŸ’» Remote workers at Global Affairs have been told they must return to the office in Ottawa. Global Affairs says 307 employees live more that 125 km from the Capital and work remotely. The Public Service Alliance of Canada says it is a ‘betrayal’.– Estelle Côté-Sroka at CBC

⚜️ The phasing out of French immersion programmes at Ottawa Carleton District School Board schools will be extended by two years.  The Board’s now sidelined elected trustees approved eliminating French immersion last year. The provincially appointed supervisor of the Board has now put off the cancellation for two years. – Ted Raymond at CTV

πŸ›Ÿ Two snowmobilers in  a week have fallen through the ice on the Rideau River.  On Sunday, a snowmobiler was able to make his way to shore after his ride fell through the ice. A week ago in Burritts Rapids Ottawa fire, paramedics, police, Ontario Provincial Police, Leeds Grenville Fire, and paramedics together pulled a man out from the ice where he was holding onto the side of his snowmobile. – Natasha O’Neill at CityNews

πŸŽ‰ The City has announced $750,000 in grants to celebrate Ottawa’s 200th birthday this year. The money will be available to three groups: artist/creators, cultural and community non-profit groups, and Ottawa business improvement area associations.   – City of Ottawa

    THE DAILY POLL

Are you looking forward to Ottawa’s 200th birthday?

    πŸ”˜ Yes

    πŸ”˜ No

πŸ”˜ Actually, the current City was formed in 2001 so it’s only 25 years old ...

    πŸ”˜ I’m celebrating 200 years of ByTown

    πŸ”˜ Ottawa doesn’t look a day over 150

    • Previously in ottawan polls:

    • We asked, ‘Do you think that the City should buy the private landfill in the east end?’

      • 14% Yes, the existing landfill will fill up sooner than later

      • 5% Yes, alternative rubbish disposal ideas are not viable

      • 25% No, we should radically cut back our waste

      • 48% No, we should be burning rubbish for energy

      • 8% The law should be: if you bring it onto your property, it doesn’t leave

    • Commentary

β–ͺ️ Don't buy a potential liability. Nordic countries have great incinerator technology.

β–ͺ️ An immediate solution was required. However, we absolutely need to build a waste to energy facility ASAP.

β–ͺ️ No one wants a dump site in their back yard. However this site has already been approved by the Ontario ministry and it seems like a viable option to a city the size of Ottawa.

β–ͺ️ Some European countries already burn refuse for energy, so why not?

β–ͺ️ This has been a proven clean method in Europe. It is even a tourist site.

β–ͺ️ We should have been drastically cutting our waste years ago. Many apartment buildings and offices are still not recycling/ composting which is not cool!

β–ͺ️ It’s absolutely nuts that in 2026 we're considering [checks notes] burning our trash. No one wants a landfill, but burning is the most caveman idea imaginable – to say nothing of the health risks and pollution.

β–ͺ️ A new landfill is needed AND people need to decrease waste. Packaging should be more environmentally friendly. People need real education on composting, recycling, and what is actual trash.
