Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? Cameroon

City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏡 The City’s Planning Committee has voted against more urban sprawl. Developer Caivan wanted to convert 16 hectares of farm land at the corner of Flewellyn and Shea roads in Stittsville to urban and planned for 360 new homes. Rideau-Jock ward councillor David Brown said, ‘there is so much land that’s already been approved for development that hasn’t been developed yet’. – Jodie Applewaithe at CBC

💣 Mayor Mark Sutcliffe played host to a presentation of the defense industry to representatives of 17 foreign missions this morning. The briefing at City Hall was intended to demonstrate how the Capital has ‘over 330 defence companies employing more than 10,000 highly-skilled workers, six NATO Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic  Test Centres including Invest Ottawa’s Area X.O, the Department of National Defence and related agencies, as well as more than 130 embassies and foreign missions’. – City of Ottawa

💸 The annual income needed to buy a standard house in Ottawa rose by $3,150 in April. The income required in March was $131,850, now it is $135,000. The average April house price is $629,800, up from $617,700 in March. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🎧 The latest OttaTalk podcast from the City has dropped. This edition features  Ottawa’s Film Commissioner, Sandrine Pechels de Saint Sardos, about ‘why Ottawa is a world class location for on-screen productions’. – City of Ottawa

🗳️ Ottawa Civic Election

  • ‘New Poll: Leiper Moves. Lawson Positions. Saravanamuttoo Exists. Tim Tierney Hovers.’ – Evan Harold Potter in City of Ottawa Politics

THE DAILY POLL

What do you think of development?

🔘 People want single family homes, and we should build out on the land surrounding Ottawa

🔘 We should be building taller on land that’s already developed

🔘 Zoning limits housing – developers should build as the market demands

🔘 I want walkable neighbourhoods and cool shops and services nearby but also to preserve the character of the existing houses

🔘 I much prefer development 20 years after it has already happened

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • We asked ‘What do you think of onions?’

    • 8% Like Darren, I think they are the devil’s vegetable and ruin everything they touch

    • 58% Love them, they are the base of all good cooking

    • 20% Cooked, grilled especially, they are delicious but not a fan of raw

    • 8% Nothing is more heartbreaking than ordering a sandwich and finding onions mixed in. Nothing.

    • 6% What’s the deal, OTTAWAN? Did Big Onion not make your payola payment this month?

    • Commentary

▪️ “If I can barely taste them we’re good to go.”

▪️ “The thing about onions is, they have layers.”

▪️ “Onions are an ingredient found in almost all international cuisines.”

▪️ “Cooking without onions is like typing without fingers.”

▪️ “Poor Darren. Who hurt you?”

▪️ “They make me cry a lot!”

▪️ “Onions are very good for you, especially for men. They significantly lower risk of developing prostate cancer (and improve erectile function).”

▪️ “Love them. Put them in most dishes I cook. Very rarely do I think a raw onion adds anything to a dish, but I’ll eat them in salsa, salads, sandwiches, and things like that.”

▪️ “Absolutely find them disgusting, cheap so everyone uses them as fillers, and only a small amount of the good stuff. Flavour takes over everything 🤢.”

▪️ “Great companion for most BBQ items.”

▪️ “Onions are great, but the texture and taste of caramelized onions is the stuff of nightmares to me and I resent their popularity in cuisine.”

▪️ “Almost all my Vegetarian meals have onions. Not sure if people who eat meat have as much onions in their meals as I do ... LOL!”

▪️ “That onion poll brought tears to my eyes.”

▪️ “And if you’re sponsored by Big Onion, I for one am here for it. Perhaps we should build a Big Onion a la the Big Apple?”
