WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🚞 An Orléans man is one of 16 who died in the Lisbon funicular tragedy. Forty-two year-old Aziz Benharref was on vacation with his wife Hind Iguernane last week when the cable on the Gloria funicular broke, derailing the tram. Iguernane is in hospital with severe injuries. A total of 16 people were killed and 21 injured. – Nathan Fung at CBC GoFundMe for Hind Iguernane
🚨 An Ottawa Police Service constable has given a one-year demotion for having sex on the job fifteen years ago. Constable Richard Lemay pleaded guilty to discreditable conduct, neglect of duty, and insubordination. Lemay was awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal by Governor General Mary Simon in 2023. – David Fraser at CBC
↪ Police chief Eric Stubbs says he wants the Ottawa Police in local schools in antipation of a new provincial law mandating it.
↪ A man arrested in Ottawa in August has been charged by Montréal police in connection with jabbing concertgoers with a syringe. Patrons at the Îlesoniq festival in Montréal had complained of a pinch, then feeling dizzy.
🪧 The City’s election compliance audit committee has voted against prosecuting Capital ward councillor Shawn Menard. After a complaint by a local developer, an audit found that Menard understated the use of old campaign signs by $318, resulting in an inaccurate financial disclosure and possible prosecution. Menard says it was a clerical error. The committee noted that even with the $319, Menard did not exceed the election expense limits. – Paula Tran in the Ottawa Citizen

THE DAILY POLL
Are you in favour of automated speed cameras?
▪️ “Libraries serve everyone and not just the working class. They’re a great community hub for rich and poor alike.”
▪️ “Yes! And I wish the downtown main branch would be kept. We need more viable public indoor free space.”
▪️ “Go into an existing physical library. You will see fewer books. Invest and encourage online borrowing.”
▪️ “Not only working class people use libraries. I hate ebooks and I have two models. Love reading paper books and libraries hold books that are not always available online. They hold the historical record of our world.”
▪️ “Libraries are one of the last truly democratic spaces, and we need more third places like that.”
▪️ “Absolutely we need new and more libraries! They are the core of the community.”
▪️ “Until we know how our economy will be impacted due to our neighbours south of us, I believe we should be cautious spending money.”
▪️ “Public libraries are about so much more than books. The educational programs alone make them worth a visit or 10.”
▪️ “Libraries are readily available everywhere we don’t need any more.”
▪️ “Libraries are the best.”
▪️ “I love my local library! They are important institutions and community hubs.”
▪️ “Actually, I am sure why I want a viable library system. While many can’t afford books, a library provides us all a place to access reading material that will broaden our horizons & support our mental & cultural development.”
▪️ “If Council will consider a 6.5% spending increase for police, we should invest double that in libraries. Of course, this Council is more about appearances than actual meaningful solutions.”
▪️ “What kind of monster is against libraries 😂”
▪️ “Libraries are a public good for everyone – working class and otherwise!”
▪️ “We need to keep people reading ... and not just on their phones. Education is the key to a lot of things in life ... especially better jobs and intelligent thinking. I was given the gift of reading as a child and it continues to this day!”
▪️ “Did you use a time machine for this poll option ‘uplift the working class’ What is this, 1905?!? You need to visit your local branch to see all the programs, services and materials you can access.”
▪️ “I love the library and I go all the time. I was very sad when I bought a house recently and learned there was no library nearby – and have already felt the loss since moving. Books and library resources are one of the best things cities offer!”
▪️ “Your answers are bad. Among many other things, libraries are meeting spaces, have children/teen/senior/second-language programming, Internet/computer/printing access, genealogy, city archives, instrument rentals, museums/parks/ski hill passes, etc etc.”
