City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚲 The City says 27 developments are affected by the ban on removing traffic lanes for bike lanes. The provincial government banned municipalities from removing car lanes for bike lanes last year, it was overturned in court soon after, but an appeal court agreed with the province the other day. The City says 20 of the developments will go ahead with minor changes but seven require significant changes. – Michael McBean in the Ottawa Citizen

🗳️ Jean-Guy Whiteduck has won reëlection as chief of Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg. Whiteduck was elected in 2024 and previously served as chief 1976 to 2006 and 2015 to 2018.  – CBC

🏈 In a sudden move, the president of the Ottawa RedBlacks is no longer in his post. The RedBlacks have not won a game this season in nine matches, and have lost 15 games in a row if you count last year. Adrian Sciarra, who was made president of the RedBlacks in 2023, will remain president of sister sports team the Ottawa 67s. – William Eltherington at CTV

In the Ottawa Citizen, Don Brennan says it isn’t accurate to say Sciarra was fired as team president, ‘If anything, he fired himself’.

🚨 Ottawa firefighters rescued a woman stuck waist-deep in a Kanata pond Sunday. The 27 year-old, who had a cell phone, was fishing in Rebecca Pond in the South March Highlands Conservation Forest when she fell in, sinking deeper each time she moved. Once rescued, she was able to get rinsed off by a hose on the firetruck. – Natasha O’Neill at CityNews

🗳️ Ottawa Civic Election

‘Reckless, modest or just right? Mayoral campaigns spar over Sutcliffe's transit plan’  – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

‘Can any of our mayoral candidates talk like a normal person?’ – Brigitte Pellerin in the Ottawa Citizen

‘Only 1 candidate is registered to run for mayor, reeve in these 21 eastern Ontario municipalities’ – Josh Pringle at CV

THE DAILY POLL

How do you feel about bike lanes?

🔘 Bikes lanes are great, keep riders safe, and increase property values

🔘 Bike lanes impede vehicular traffic

🔘 Separated bike lanes are great, the lines painted beside the traffic lane are pointless

🔘 I see far more cars than bikes, bike lanes are a waste of money and time

🔘 Only vehicles that existed when a street was laid out should be allowed to use it

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • When is the last time you went to the Byward Market?

    • 22% I go regularly

    • 17% At least monthly

    • 50% I have been there over the years

    • 7% Never

    • 4% When I need to get a portrait taken at the Laff

Commentary

▪️ “I find it is a bit grungy and have heard of violence so not keen. But went to a great restaurant when friends reserved and loved the place : food and vibe : Ratatouille Bistro.”

▪️ “Every Saturday afternoon for a little walk and a coffee.”

▪️ “I find it no longer appealing or safe.”

▪️ “I have not been there since before COVID.”

▪️ “I get out walking quite a bit, and I love to walk down through the Byward Market to places beyond. I rarely buy anything, It’s not like it used to be where you could check out multiple vendors to pick your own produce. I do frequently dine there.”

▪️ “Although I try hard to go monthly the situation on the Nicholas St ramp into Ottawa is ridiculous- horrid road and needs some art to hide LRT.”

▪️ “I used to love going to the Byward Market. Nothing to draw me there anymore. Parking is a nightmare and expensive. LRT not dependable. No more Farmer’s Market. I used to bring out of town visitors there, not anymore. It’s a disgrace! What happened?”

▪️ “It was our preferred shopping place —often by bike — from our arrival in 1974 until at least 2004.”

▪️ “I admit I avoided the Market for years when I lived on the border of Centretown and the Glebe. Alas, I moved and am now in the Market several times a week.”

▪️ “Parking is crap, and the vendors are no longer market gardeners/farmers. Perhaps I am showing my age, but the restaurant/club vibe is not for me. Nor is being badgered for money by strangers.”

▪️ “I bring out-of-town friends to it for some reason, and I usually park near it when I have to go to the US Embassy. But I never go there for fun or whatever.”

▪️ “Not anymore since past 5 years. Access too complicated unless by foot. Parking rare and expensive.”

▪️ “The last time I went to that area it was about 15 years ago when they still had a real farmer’s market. But, given all the hassels to get there, panhandling and other issues, I have no plans to ever return – thank you very much!”

▪️ “I was in the Market area 4 years ago for a wedding. Prior to that over 15 years ago. When the market was a market!”

▪️ “Only during the day before the vampires come out!”

▪️ “I probably go a couple of times per year.”

▪️ “My European Deli is down there ... so usually once or twice a month ... go early get out fast.”

▪️ “I must say I love the Byward Market. It’s the only place in Ottawa where you can feel the city is alive. I must add that bylaws harassing customers and such short term parking (2 hours) makes me regret going there each time.”

▪️ “The Byward Market is absolutely filthy and an embarrassment to our city!”

▪️ “I like ByWard Market. Great places to eat.”

▪️ “The Byward Market needs some serious work in order to entice people to come. It could be a lively place for tourists and locals to enjoy but it is dead and a bit of an eyesore.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

  • We probably should be paying more attention to the owner of the Ottawa Charge.

  • American billionaire Mark Walker owns the Professional Women’s Hockey League, and, since the league owns all the teams, also owns the Charge. He also owns significant parts of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and English Premier League football team Chelsea FC.

  • Last year, Walker bought the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team from the Buss family, and flipped it to former Disney president Bob Iger and Jared Kushner’s younger brother Joshua for US $12.5 billion this year.

But there are dark clouds gathering  over our Charge owner. Walker is under investigation by American regulatory agencies over loans made by his companies Delaware Life Insurance Company and Clear Spring Life and Annuity.

  • Maybe it’s nothing, or maybe its a timebomb on the future of the Charge.
