QUOTE

– Prime Minister Mark Carney’s answer when asked about what is going on with the official residence.

Carney says that he believes that he should leave the house in better shape that he found it but that he will probably never live in it. Carney, like former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before him, live on the Governor General’s lawn, in Rideau Cottage.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚄 The best location to place a station for the Alto high speed train line is downtown, say downtown advocates. The heads of the Ottawa Board of Trade, Invest Ottawa, and Ottawa Tourism have signed a letter to the president of the crown corporation building Alto reading, in part, ‘Ottawa is not simply a city among cities. It is a place where Canadian values, history, and modern national identity intersect, where the institutions, landmarks, and public spaces that define who we are as a country come together in a single walkable core’. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🚨 Ottawa man convicted in 2015 of being an ISIS recruiter is being released.  After serving two-thirds of a 17 year sentence on a charge of encourging others in engage in terrorist violence, Ashton Larmond is being statutorily released into a community-based residential facility. The parole board considers Larmond to be ‘within the category of male offenders likely to reoffend within three years’. – Stewart Lews in the National Post

🪏 Ottawa Police Service chief Eric Stubbs says the extra $10 million to construct the new Barrhaven police station is ‘a learning lesson’. He was defending the $233 million cost of building a new training centre next to the new police station. The $10 million was blamed on poor soil conditions which were not noticed prior to construction. – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

💰The latest local bank closure is the Royal Bank in Westboro. Accounts at the branch at 236 Richmond Road will be transferred to the Carlingwood branch. The final day in Westboro is Aug. 27. Customers are invited to attend an information session at Carlingwood Shopping Centre on May 26. – Josh Pringle at CTV

THE DAILY POLL

Should the new Alto high speed line station be downtown?

🔘 Yes, if the train isn’t downtown-to-downtown, it loses most of its value

🔘 No, the disruption of building track or tunnelling will be incredibly annoying

🔘 We have two perfectly decent VIA Rail stations that could be used

🔘 The line to the old downtown station was replaced by Colonel By Drive. I'm fine with digging that up and replacing it with track

🔘 Such lack of imagination. Just slow the train down to escalator speed and let people hop on/off – no station needed

      Commentary

▪️ I like most things equally.

▪️ I live for the little bit at the end – long live ‘But one more thing’!

▪️ Why wasn’t Polls a poll option?

▪️ It’s actually the daily poll, but that wasn't an option.

▪️ I love everything. Good balance of news and info. Continued success going forward!

▪️ And of course your polls are always fun!

▪️ Picking WOTA but the stats are a very close second. The capitalization or not of THE OTTAWAN doesn’t keep me awake at night but I am ever grateful for the Canadian spelling such as favourite, neighbour, etc.

▪️ Great synopsis of the daily happenings!

▪️ But what Ottawa is talking about is a close second.

▪️ I really like all of it. This was a hard choice. In order, What Ottawa is talking about, One More thing, and the three day or 4 day calendar. All three were practically tied.

▪️ If Martha’s Mom’s Choosin’ Hat had been an option, it would have won in a landslide.

▪️ But I love it all!

▪️ The door handle comment!

▪️ My choice for ‘Favourite’ is overstating it; really appreciate all of the sections almost equally:)

▪️ So many parts I like but that wasn’t an option.

▪️ Really, I love every part of The Ottawa. It’s the best email I get most days.

▪️ I enjoy the calendar most, but am too old to take part.

▪️ I love the polls – keep ‘em coming!
