WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🕘 Premier Doug Ford has asked the Federal government to bring its employees back to the office five days per week. The Federal government is now the outlier – both the City and the Province have ordered everyone back to the office full time. – Josh Pringle at CTV
↪ City manager Wendy Stephanson says her back-to-the-office order is to ‘increase culture, innovation, [and] relationship-building at the city’.
↪ The mayor of Gatineau, Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, says there is no desire to bring her city workers back to the office full time as long as services are being maintained.
🔍 Transport Canada has specified what is looking for from last month’s small plane crash. It is two parts of the engire: ‘a piece of the engine’s crankcase casting and the camshaft’. The agency suspects the crankcase casting would have fallen out over Westboro and the camshaft near the Ottawa Airport. If you find any airplane parts, email communications@bst-tsb.gc.ca – Gary Dimmock in the Ottawa Citizen
👑 Councillors in the small township of Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards are shocked by their mayor's use of ‘strong’ powers. At last week’s council meeting, mayor Dave Mayville gave himself the powers to create the budget and to direct the Township’s Chief Administration Officer, removing them from council. He also dissolved all council committes and imposed a hiring freeze. The Province gave ‘strong mayor’ powers to almost all Ontario councils earlier in the year after a trial run in Ottawa and Toronto. – Terry Fleurie in the Eganville Leader
🦺 The City is looking for your opinion on ‘bubble zones’. The City is proposing a bylaw that would limit demonstrations around places of worship and religious centres, schools, daycares, health care facilities, and care homes in order to give people who use those facilities safe access. However, limiting protests has inherit risks of being against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The questionnaire is here. – City of Ottawa
THE DAILY POLL
What do you thing about the National Capital Commission?
-
Previously in ottawan polls:
-
We asked, ‘Do you think that Stéphanie Plante should have been reprimanded for responding to residents on social media with mean memes?’
-
29% Yes, she’s an elected official and has a duty to remain professional
-
37% No, elected officials are not employees. Debating with the public is part of the job.
-
9% I won't even pretend to understand what a ‘meme’ is
-
25% I refuse to learn about whatever this is about, it seems so out there
-
Commentary
▪️ “What a crock of bull. A meme is harassment? Oh, snowflakes, toughen up.”
▪️ “If a counsellor is wasting their time arguing with people using a fascist-controlled platform, that says a lot about them.”
▪️ “We hire an integrity commissioner and then ignore her recommendations. If Council won’t back her up, the Integrity Commissioner should resign and the position abolished.”
▪️ “If I’m allowed to cyber bully the mayor, maybe the mayor should be allowed to cyber bully me back, ya know?”
