WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💪 The City wants your help in making Ottawa the ParticipACTION champion of Canada. Officially, it’s called ‘Canada’s Most Active Community’ but we really just wanted to highlight the sponsor, ParticipACTION, because when was the last time you heard that name? Like THE OTTAWAN, probably when you were trying to do chin-up in gym class.

In any case, individiuals or teams pledge to do the activities and report them on an app. The winning municipality gets $100,000 for local sport programmes.  – City of Ottawa

🥂 The nine booze-friendly Ottawa parks for summer 2026 have been announced. Last year there were eight, but a ninth has been added. The parks are:

  • Brewer Park
  • Lansdowne Park’s orchard
  • Minto Park
  • McNabb Park
  • Queenswood Ridge Park
  • Riverain Park
  • Strathcona Park
  • Champlain Park
  • and new for 2026, Primrose Park

But don’t pop your cork yet – the summer alcohol programme doesn’t start until next Monday. Hours are 11:00 am to 9:00 pm.  – CBC

🚧 Here are more details about the partially-built apartments at Baseline Road and Clyde Avenue, courtesy of Ottawa Construction News.  The trade mag doesn't have answers but it does have a more granular history of how the situation turned out as it did. – ‘Perfect storm of debt and rising interest rates leaves 402-unit Ottawa apartment project stalled as concrete skeleton’

↪ Developers have proposed a new 232 home subdivision in Kanata and a building with 80 to 90 not-for-profit apartments on a parking lot in the Glebe.

THE DAILY POLL

What would you choose in a modern day ParticipACTION?

🔘 Number of times making a plan to go out, then attempting to get out of it when the day arrives

🔘 Minutes spent convincing the cat that you are in fact dead when it tries to wake you at dawn

🔘 Length of a walk/hike/bike decided by the best restaurant/pub at the end of it

🔘 The highest number of streaming episodes binged in one day

🔘 Number of days of good heart health counted by glasses of red wine

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Are you concerned about the planned nuclear waste disposal facility at Chalk River?

    • 19% Yes, there only needs to be one accident for a terrible outcome, no matter how careful they are

    • 24% No, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories has been handling radioactive material there for decades without issues

    • 1% Won't somebody think of the turtles? And the two kinds of bats?

    • 0% It has the word nuclear in it – that’s all I need to oppose it

    • 56% I’m not opposed to the plan in general but surely there is someplace to put it that is not next to a major river

    • Commentary

▪️ “Congrats on the band for convincing the court.”

▪️ “Very happy to hear that the courts are siding with Kebaoek First Nation - best news in a long time.”

▪️ “We don’t want to be known as death valley.”

▪️ “My biggest concern is the umlaut in coöperation. Who does that?”

▪️ “Crazy that 3 endangered species were enough to reverse their decision – thousands of species must have been affected since the 40’s.”

▪️ “I did a paper on this for my MA! The site is needed but due diligence was absolutely not done. They have the opportunity to do it correctly now, and hopefully they do.”

▪️ “I worked at a nuclear facility there back in the 60s and was totally impressed with the safety and environmental protocols.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Andrew King’s Ottawa Rewind has taken a look at Samuel de Champlain’s diaries and found that this week, in 1613, Champlain was in our neck of the woods. On June 1, he almost died in the rapids near Hawkesbury. June 2 and 3, he camped – probably – on Miller Island, across from Montebello. But on June 4, Champlain and company make it to the future Ottawa/Gatineau proper.

RAPID RESPONSE QUALITY CONTROL

What did you think of today’s OTTAWAN?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great

⭐⭐⭐ Satisfactory

⭐ Needs Improvement

Comment of the Week: ‘Well organized; good local information; maybe more on Gatineau would be appreciated’
