Agenda

Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? Moldova

City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚊 OC Transpo will make major changes to buses and O Train starting Sunday. Some highlights:

  • Line 1 will increase frequency, Line 2 will open earlier from the south
  • Seven new Express Routes, and new direct connections between Gatineau, Kanata, and Barrhaven
  • More reliable schedules on 22 bus routes

The details of all the changes can be found at OC Transpo’s Your Ride site.

– City of Ottawa

β†ͺ Vending machines are being rolled out at Pimisi, Parliament, uOttawa, Rideau, and St Laurent O Train stations, and Billings Bridge bus station.

β†ͺ ‘Communication, lack of express buses among main concerns for riders’ as OC Transpo open houses end.

🩲 Gatineau police are asking Capital residents if they have had their underwear stolen in the past few years. After a 52 year-old Gatineau man was arrested for burglary, the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau says the man offered services as a handyman, mainly to women. Some customers reported finding extra underwear afterwards or their own missing. Contact Gatineau police at 819 243 4636 ext. 5 if you encountered something like this. – Josh Pringle at CTV

πŸ—οΈ A developer has applied to convert a concrete 16 storey office building on Albert Street to residential. The plan would see studio, one-bedroom, and two bedroom apartments on 15 floors with the roof converted to an ‘amenity’.  – Josh Pringle at CTV

πŸ›’ Every week @stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. This week he highlights eggs ($4.98/18 pack at  Metro), milk ($4.98/4L at Food Basics), and strawberries $(1.79/340g at Produce Depot).  – /Ottawa

πŸ—³οΈ Ottawa Civic Election

  •  ‘Why eight OCDSB trustee candidates are running individual campaigns under shared values’  – Natasha Baldin in the Ottawa Citizen
  •  ‘Sutcliffe's transit election promises offer hope for a better OC Transpo’  – Randall Denley in the Ottawa Citizen

THE DAILY POLL

Who does the handywork in your home?

πŸ”˜ Me / my significant other

πŸ”˜ A family member or friend that I can apply pressure to

πŸ”˜ One of those online call-a-handyperson services for a monthly fee

πŸ”˜ Whoever comes up first on Google

πŸ”˜ It’s probably for the best that the fire marshal or Ottawa Bylaw doesn’t make any sudden inspections

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Have you ever taken part in the Clean the Capital campaign?

    • 31% Yes

    • 23% No, but I would like to

    • 28% No, this is the kind of thing that our taxes should pay for

    • 7% I could use a team to come and do something about my kitchen

    • 11% Thousands of people getting up early and spending a weekend cleaning a ditch? That’s possibly the most Ottawa thing ever

Commentary

β–ͺ️ “Maybe the new foot patrols in the Market could pick up some trash along their travels ...”

β–ͺ️ “Ridiculous that our taxes don’t even pay for this. We are the Capital of Canada and our public spaces look horrible. Weeds and garbage along main roads. Curbs overgrown with weeds and grass.”

β–ͺ️ “Perhaps that people receiving the government handouts and living off the system should be required to complete some mandated clean up of our city (in addition to substance testing)!”

β–ͺ️ “Yes with Girl Guides as a community activity in our local park. We also did a Shoreline Clean Up each year near Parliament Hill. These days though some of the garbage might be more of a concern with needles, pills and other things getting into parks.”

β–ͺ️ “This is something young offenders and their colleagues in the innes road prison should do. Make them work it off. Hopefully this won’t interfere with their gym and recreational activities. Poor darlings.”

β–ͺ️ “This kind of activity could generate civic pride if it came from the grass roots. Coming from ‘The City’ – who cares?”

β–ͺ️ “This Cleanup campaign should be run multiple times every year and more so in summer to get more people out doing the cleanup.”

β–ͺ️ “I pick up garbage weekly on all my walks to clean the capital. Too bad more people don’t do this.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

If you didn’t catch the news a few hours ago, US president Donald Trump went through with his threat and issued an executive order requiring American government agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as Lake America.

Almost immediately, Lee Finishen, a wag living in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, made this tweet – on the official White House feed – declaring the new name of Washington DC as South Ottawa, complete with renamed neighbourhoods.
