Last year, the folks at The Mainstreeter bimonthly newspaper asked for THE OTTAWAN’s assistance in creating a weekly newsletter focusing on the news and events going on in the Old Ottawa East area.
We came up with The Sidestreeter and we’ve producing it for them ever since, adding news and events for Alta Vista, Centretown, Old Ottawa East, Old Ottawa South, The Glebe, Little Italy, and Vanier along the way. If you’re interested, it’s free, and you can sign up here.

🍽️ If you’re looking for a local restaurant for your Food Day Canada celebration on Saturday August 1, the official website recommends: Absinthe Café, Atelier, Coconut Lagoon, Fauna, Thali, and the Wellington Gastropub. If you’re traveling elsewhere in Canada on that date, you’ll find suggestions for regions as well. If you’re staying home but you want to celebrate Canada’s cuisine, remember to shop local by stopping at one our city’s many farmers' markets.
🍔 After a successful soft launch last week, Antica’s Cafe Kitchen has now opened in the space vacated by the beloved Bamm’s Snack Shack, 74 Cobourg. It’s a lunch, dinner, and ‘all day snacks’ spot with sandwiches, burgers, and poutine to satisfy your hunger. There aren’t a lot of vegan menu items yet but the owners say more plant-based options are on the horizon. This unlicensed joint has a sturdy selection of non-alcoholic beer and cocktails. 🛻 Convoy organizer Tamara Lich wants court’s okay to visit the White House and go on cruise during her sentence. Sentenced to house arrest for her role in the 2022 Convoy siege of downtown Ottawa, Lich has since been granted court permission to work for Rebel News. That Rebel News employment allowed her to attend the July 4 party at the US embassy, and is now attempting to assign her to cover a story at the White House and attend Rebel News’ News Cruise next December. – David Fraser at CBC
🏵️ The City is looking for feedback on renaming three public facilities. The proposals are:
- Name Ball Diamond 1, located in Andy Shields Park, 1448 Meadow Drive in Greely to Victor Wootton Ball Diamond.
- Name the second-floor kitchen, located within the Hintonburg Community Centre, 1064 Wellington Street West in Ottawa to Paulette’s Kitchen.
- Name the Petrie Island East Bay Beach, located at 777 Tweddle Road in Cumberland to Phil McNeely Beach.

🚄 Kingston may get an Alto high speed train stop after all. Chief executive Martin Imbleau says feedback from the public was clear that there is a desire for a Kingston stop. As it is, Kingston is the fourth busiest VIA Rail station in Canada. – CBC
🛏️ A new Moxy hotel has opened on York Street for your hipster vistors. A brand of the Mariott corporation, Moxy hotels say they are ‘designed for the next generation of travellers - playful, social, energetic, and undeniably fun’. Included are ‘industrial chic’ and, you read this right, Mox, the official Moxy Ottawa Downtown brand ambassador, which is some sort of motorcycle-riding moose. Checking the site for a stay tonight, the lowest rate is $214, which, hard as it is to swallow, is not an outlandish price. – PR Newswire
