WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🎉 SOPA has a friend. Welcome ACE, the Arts, Culture and Entertainment district. A couple of years ago, downtown restaurants named their neighbourhood South of Parliament Area to up their cachet. Now the City and the Ottawa Art Gallery have created ACE, which ‘encompasses several iconic downtown areas, including the ByWard Market, Rideau Street, Sparks Street, Centretown, LeBreton Flats, and the Bank Street and Elgin Street corridors’.

The statements says the district will be supported by three initiatives:

  • The Arts Corridor: A curated public art route connecting three major cultural anchors, the OAG, the National Arts Centre, and the National Gallery of Canada, through bold, contemporary art installations in unexpected downtown spaces.
  • Asphalt Art Initiative: A massive, colourful street mural on York Street West and ByWard Market Square.
  • SoundScape Festival: A six-week summer event series transforming the unique corridor beneath the Plaza Bridge (at Elgin and Rideau streets) into an immersive, lively performance venue.

🧠  Artists and customers cause Art House Café to cancel an artificial intelligence meetup. The Saturday AI club, which booked the space but wasn’t organized by Art House, was scheduled for last Saturday. But after a backlash, the Café said their ‘intention with accepting to host this event was never to endorse the use of AI to replace human creativity or artistry’  and cancelled the event. – Michael McBean in the Ottawa Citizen

🚨 Over 100 Ottawa Police Service officers were caught up in driving related incidents last year. The Service received 590 complaints from the public or from photo radar camera tickets, red light camera violations, and at-fault collisions. One hundred and eight violations were upheld, with officers required to pay the fine or forfeit hours of pay. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🗳️ Ottawa Civic Election

  • ‘Will Alex Lawson and Neil Saravanamuttoo Become the Election Kingmakers?’ – Evan Harold Potter at City of Ottawa Politics
  • ‘Neil Saravanamuttoo promises to 'shake things up' if he is Ottawa's new mayor’ – Aedan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen

THE DAILY POLL

Where will you be watching Canada v Qatar tomorrow?

🔘 At home

🔘 At a friend’s home

🔘 At a restaurant/pub (Name it in the comments!)

🔘 Doomscrolling on my phone, expecting people to post updates

🔘 Yawn. Not interested

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Have you ever considered running for City Council?

    • 4% Yes, and I did

    • 31% Yes, but then the whole idea of kissing hands and shaking babies and raising money turned me off

    • 36% Never, there are people who are better suited for it

    • 4% Never, because if voting changed anything it wouldn’t be legal

    • 25% There are many, but less glamorous, ways to support our community, I do that

    • Commentary

▪️ “Public life is not for everyone. Kudos to those who want to run for public office.”

▪️ “I can barely manage my own life – I’d be wildly unsuited to that kind of responsibility!”

▪️ “I ran for city council in Nebraska, felt immense relief when I failed to advance from the primary. I’d have started on the council in 2020, just in time for the pandemic and racial justice protests that would have made it even more of a thankless job.”

▪️ “I would run but the salary is far too low for the responsabilities. Instead, we attract candidates like ****** who don’t have the necessary experience and who are willing to work for that type of money.”

Editor’s note: The reader included a sitting city councillor’s name, which THE OTTAWAN has redacted on the grounds of it being a cheap shot. Just assume ***** represents the city councillor you dislike the most.

▪️ “Volunteer in community service organizations as becoming a City Councillor is now to dangerous!”

▪️ “I'm not comfortable enough with lying to be a politician.”
