  • Amendment to Building By-law No. 2014-220
  • Status Update – Planning and Housing Committee Inquiries and Motions for the period ending June 5, 2026

Agenda

Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? None

City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🗳️ You don’t need to run for office, you can run for the position of auditing the accounts of those who run for office. The City has opened up recruiting for its Election Compliance Audit Committee. While anyone can apply, the ‘ideal candidate’ would have ‘practical experience in administering elections, with a specific focus on municipal election finance’ and urges ‘Indigenous and racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and women and gender diverse persons to apply’. The City also requests – voluntarily – a statement on ‘how your lived experience and perspectives strengthen your application’.  – City of Ottawa

🚨 Three people have been arrested for using counterfeit money to pay for items bought online. Victims report being conned out of tens of thousands of dollars when selling ‘electronics, collectible cards, gold jewellery, and computer equipment’. The statement by the Ottawa Police Service doesn’t spell it out, but THE OTTAWAN believes that it was all face-to-face sales done locally, conducted over services like Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace. – Ottawa Police Service

🧠 Shareholders of Shopify have voted against having an artificial intelligence policy. At the annual general meeting of the local mom and pop business, shareholders voted down a proposal by the United Church of Canada’s pension plan which worries ‘generative AI systems may negatively impact human rights and agentic AI can cause misinformation, manipulation and erroneous automated transactions’.  Shopify’s board of directors recommended the no vote, stating that it already had guardrails over artificial intelligence. – The Canadian Press

🗳️ Ottawa Civic Election

  • ‘Jeff Leiper's plan if he becomes Ottawa's new mayor’ – Aedan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen

THE DAILY POLL

Have you ever considered running for City Council?

🔘 Yes, and I did

🔘 Yes, but then the whole idea of kissing hands and shaking babies and raising money turned me off

🔘 Never, there are people who are better suited for it

🔘 Never, because if voting changed anything it wouldn’t be legal

🔘 There are many, but less glamorous, ways to support our community, I do that

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Statistics Canada says Canadian travel to the US is up 9.5% over last year. What do you think?

    • 51% I have not wavered in my intention to not cross into the US

    • 12% The boycott was fine at the time but it has run its course

    • 13% I was never in favour of boycotting travel to the US

    • 13% It’s getting more and more difficult to avoid crossing the border but I am holding the line

    • 11% In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances.

    • Commentary

▪️ “If I were to go to the US, I’d like to know that I won’t end up in a cage.”

▪️ “I do understand that people have family members in the US and other compelling reasons to travel. But on the discretionary stuff, let’s hold firm and continue to send a message with our wallets.”

▪️ “I am more afraid to travel to the USA than to Mexico! I won't go to the USA until the orange one is gone!”

▪️ “I’m an American happily living in Ottawa, and I have no intention of visiting the US.”

▪️ “It may seem like a small, individual effort, but I have not and will not travel to the US while the current administration is in place. I am loving exploring my own beautiful country.”

▪️ “Until Trump and his party policies change their negative attitude towards Canada, I’m perfectly fine not visiting the USA.”

▪️ “Won’t go back till the orange malignancy is out of office.”

▪️ “Also restricting my Made in USA purchases to necessary items.”

▪️ “I wish people would stop going to the US. I refuse to go until the orange clown is gone. Let the US tourism and economic sector feel it in their bottom line and maybe then they will ask for change in their government policies.”

▪️ “As a Black man I simply do not nor may ever feel safe crossing that border.”

▪️ “There are so many great places in the world to explore. I don’t know if I will ever go back to the US.”

▪️ “I am considering short trips to places friendly to us, but not to any of the goofy, Trump loving States.”

▪️ “Stop traveling to US the first time Trump was elected! Doubt I’ll ever cross that border again.”

▪️ “Traitors!”

▪️ “As long as THAT MAN is in office, I will not go to the US.”

▪️ “Hard to believe its up 9.5% with Captain orange and ICE mandates.”

▪️ “Message to all the boycotters out there: Travel Down South.”

▪️ “You would have to pay me a lot of money to go to the US. They chose this leader and his nonsense either by voting for him or not bothering to, so they can go to hell.”

▪️ “I’m an American who refuses to go back to America. My Canadian citizenship application has been submitted.”

▪️ “My father was born in Massachusetts. I would love to visit and see where he was born. Due to their lack of gun laws and also the dictatorship that is happening at present, I doubt I will ever go to USA again. Sad, NOT sad.”

▪️ “As long as Trump and his goons are in power, I will do everything I can to avoid contributing to the US economy.”

▪️ “I’m 51 and have travelled down there only a few times. If I never go again, I won’t lose a minute of sleep. I’d rather spend my time and money in literally any other country. Also, they will ban your ass if you admit to have ever used cannabis. Losers.”

▪️ “Not only for their 51st state rhetoric but also for how they are treating refugees and migrants. Keep boycotting.”

▪️ “If I ever go back, it will be a miracle.”

▪️ “I will not step one proud Canadian foot into that quagmire that they call a country.”

▪️ “You can’t entice me to cross borders shop no matter how much cheaper, a lot of things are. Besides, even as a Canadian citizen, with no criminal record, I am afraid of ending up in some kind of ice holding cell. Who wants to take the risk?”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

There is one fewer reason to keep the ol’ shortwave radio around: the National Research Council’s time signal station near the Ottawa airport, which operates under the callsign CHU, will cease broadcasting next Monday after 103 years.

Only three years ago, the Council stopped broadcasting its official time signal on CBC Radio, citing the fact that the time wasn’t accurate in an age when people listen via the Internet or by being bounce off satellites, which can add extra seconds.

In CHU’s case, it’s a matter of money – the Federal government is in a cost cutting mood and you probably had no idea that CHU even existed until now. The Wikipedia page has a couple of audio samples of what you’ve been missing.

For what it’s worth, your phones and computers are keeping time using servers at, amongst others, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung.

If you want to keep your time keeping Great White North compliant, you can use the National Reseach Council’s atomic clock  by going to the time and date settings on your device and changing the time server to:  time.nrc.ca or time.chu.nrc.ca
