OTTAWAN (TO BE) OF THE DAY

QUOTE

Gail Robertson, whose 2010 Honda SUV was stolen and used by thieves to crash through the front window of  International Mobile Services in Orléans in January. Then it disappeared and Robertson spent weeks trying to track down what happened to it.

Eventually, her insurance company found it and said it was a write-off.

WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL

Public Works and Infrastructure Committee
Monday, March 30 at 9:39 am

  • Road Modifications for the Manor Park Integrated Road, Water and Sewer Project (Arundel Avenue, Kilbarry Crescent, Braemar Street, Finter Street, Farnham Crescent and Jeffrey Avenue)
  • Bank Street Active Transportation and Transit Priority Feasibility Study

Agenda

Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? None

City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💰 The new Ontario budget doesn’t have much for the City of Ottawa. Despite the fact that Ottawa City Council passed a budget for OC Transpo with a deficit in the expectation that the Province would pony up money, however, no money has been allocated.  – Ted Raymond at CTV

💰 The assistant deputy minister responsible for cleaning up the Federal Phoenix payroll system mess has quit. Alex Benay says the three years that he worked on task at Public Service and Procurement Canada were ‘some of the most challenging, and rewarding, of my career’. Benay is leaving for ‘personal reasons’.  – Matteo Cimellaro in the Ottawa Citizen

🗑️ Your garbage collection may be changing starting Monday. As the City has changed its rubbish collection contract, about one-half of Ottawa homes will have a new garbage collection day. Check the calendar here to see if you are affected.

This only applies to houses – apartment buildings are not serviced by the City and have always arranged for their own garbage and recycling collection. – City of Ottawa

🚧 Woodroffe Avenue between Richmond Road and Deschênes Street will be fully closed to vehicular traffic until autumn. The City says the closure will allow for ‘upgrading and relocating multiple utilities, traffic signals, streetlighting, and permanent roadword’. – City of Ottawa

THE DAILY POLL

Would you rather fight one horse‑sized duck or 100 duck‑sized horses?

🔘 One horse-sized duck

🔘 100 duck-sized horses

🔘 I’m a lover, not a fighter and would rather sit down and talk out our issues over hay and bread crusts

  • Previously in ottawan polls:

  • We asked, ‘Should the Mayor post only positive photos?’

    • 4% Yes, he is our Mayor not our city artist, he should put Ottawa’s best face forward

    • 30% No, I’d rather the Mayor have a well rounded view of Ottawa, not one of rose-coloured glasses

    • 13% This may be the only original thing a mayor in Canada has done

    • 13% What is a Twitter?

    • 40% It could be worse, he could be taking pictures of what he had for lunch

    •
      Commentary

▪️ THE OTTAWAN is seriously digging deep on what to ask on opinion surveys/Polls! What's next, ‘Would you rather fight one horse‑sized duck or 100 duck‑sized horses?’

▪️ Why not? As long as they aren’t illegal or criminal I don’t think it matters.

▪️ Everyone knows the cool kids post their photos to Pixelfed, so ... that tracks.

▪️ He should look for double-car O-trains to photograph and if there aren’t any he should get to work fixing them.

▪️ I don’t care about his choice of pictures. FIX OC TRANSPO.

▪️ How about he posts videos from when he goes running because our public transit system is so unreliable.

▪️ I subscribe to the mayors weekly and have to say it’s the most boring and least informative read of my week. He/they appear to be concentrating on what’s pc & non controversial and no longer informative.

▪️ Who cares?

▪️ His dreary photos kind of suit his public persona.

▪️ Why can’t weeee be friends! RE cats vs dogs dilemma, but also in general, teamwork makes the dream work.

▪️ We need to see and hear about the good, the bad and the ugly.

▪️ He should at least post nice photos. Not grey, slushy, depressing ones with dead trees.

▪️ I would appreciate really nice and beautiful pictures of our city Ottawa, I think we see so much pictures on social media of the wars and disasters.

▪️ It’s almost as if it ever occurred to some people to just scroll by the content they don’t like or want to see.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Despite its headline ‘Ottawa’s Most Expensive Streets’, Faces magazine says these are the most expensive neighbourhoods in Ottawa: Rockcliffe Park, Lindenlea, New Edinburgh, Old Ottawa South, Old Ottawa East, Westboro, Civic Hospital Area, Golden Triangle, Manor Park, and Manotick.

Josh Pringle at CTV notes that the annual income required to buy an average home in Ottawa was  $131,610 in February, up $1,730 from Janaury.
