QUOTE

“

  • We want to attract Francophones. We want people from Gatineau to come here and participate in our events. I think they’ll think we’re taking this a bit lightly when we make mistakes like ‘publiques’ without the ‘l’

– Rideau-Vanier ward councillor Stéphanie Plante, who was not thrilled with French language posters promoting the ‘Uncommon Spaces’ initiative in Centretown spelling ‘Placettes Publiques’ (public squares) as  ‘Placettes Pubiques’ (pubic squares).

While the City supports the ‘Uncommon Spaces’ initiative, it didn’t make the signs, the Centretown Business Improvement Area did.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏅 Apartment 613 wants you to join them in a week of local sports. The local culture website realized that next week it would be possible to see a home game of every professional Ottawa team currently in the regular season – so they are going, and they're inviting everyone to join them.

That planetary alignment of home games are:

  • Thursday, July 2  6:30pm – Ottawa Titans
  • Friday, July 3  7:30pm – Ottawa Redblacks
  • Saturday, July 4  3pm –Atlético Ottawa
  • Sunday, July 5  2pm – Ottawa Rapid FC
  • Tuesday, July 7  6:30pm – Ottawa Titans (proposed backup rain date)
  • Wednesday, July 8  7:30pm – Ottawa BlackJacks

 – Kiersten Vuorimaki in Apartment 613

⚡ Dozens of electric buses were out of service Saturday morning due to lack of charging . OC Transpo says that a software issue caused the buses to charge much slower than usual, making them undriveble. Drivers had to be shuttled to garages not normally open on weekends to find other buses. President of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279 Noah Vineberg said he is surprised there is no warning system that buses are not charging. – Kimberley Molina at CBC

🛟 Chelsea’s new swimming hole comes with a to-do list. The Farm Point open-water swimming spot was previously unofficial and unregulated but now that the municipality has adopted it, there are rules:

  • Whistle, bright swim cap, and buoy are mandatory
  • Swim with a partner
  • No recreational swimming

Apparently, ‘recreational swimming’ is a term of art, meaning treading water or puttering around, and would require lifeguards to be placed.

Plus some other rules depending on the temperature, like wetsuits only in 16° - 18° weather.   – Cameron Mahler at CBC

↪ Seven people in a pontoon boat were rescued by Ottawa Fire Services from Deschênes Rapids.

🔊 Neighbours complain that The Clemow’s air conditioning noise has returned for the summer. The posh adults-only building was the target of complaints all last summer due to the noise from its rooftop machinery.  – Michael McBean in the Ottawa Citizen

🎧 The latest edition of the City’s podcast, OttaTalk, has dropped. This edition goes door to door with a couple of Ottawa Fire Service fire prevention officers looking for hazards. – City of Ottawa

THE DAILY POLL

Do you visit Ottawa’s shopping centres?

🔘 Yes, I love having everything in one place

🔘 Yes, but they have fewer and fewer shops of interest to me

🔘 No, I prefer to support local shops on neighbourhood streets as much as possible

🔘 There is no real reason to have shops anymore, online is cheaper and has more variety

🔘 Whatever, OTTAWAN, you’re just looking to sell more t-shirts with out-of-business logos

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Are the speed limits in Ottawa too low?

    • 34% Yes, I feel like traffic in the City is crawling

    • 29% No, it’s already unsafe at the speeds we have

    • 22% There is a movement to make 20 km/h the limit in cities across the world. I agree with that

    • 4% There is a movement across the world to remove speed limits completely resulting in drivers driving more cautiously. I agree with that

    • 11% I’d say transit always runs at the right speed ... but this is Ottawa

    • Commentary

▪️ “I think it’s 30km/h but still.”

▪️ “Grew up outside Toronto, drove in Mexico City, Montréal and Vancouver, Ottawa drivers, proportionally, are the worst I have ever seen. No speed limit will fix that!!”

▪️ “The speed cameras were working, but the genius Ford got rid of them. Traffic in our neighbourhood is supposed to be 40! Many go at least 50 some more. Lower it to 20 and maybe they would at least go 40.”

▪️ “We literally have an insane problem with stunt driving. What are you talking about?”

▪️ “I find most speed limits could safely be 10 kilometres faster.”

▪️ “I am shocked at how dangerously a lot of people are driving! Wake up, stop looking at your %$#& phone! Think about other people and care about them! Care about yourself too!”

▪️ “Changing the rules for the convenience of drivers (imagined convenience, with time saved being in seconds) against the safety of everyone? No thank you.”

▪️ “Don’t worry about our speed limits – FIX the transit system first as that will pay handsome dividends for a VERY long time!”

▪️ “How can we complain about global warming and then raise the speed limit? The higher the speed, the more fuel you burn. It’s that pesky science thing again!”

▪️ “What if there were no more cars and only pedestrians and public transit? Ahhh a utopia.”

▪️ “30 seems reasonable on city streets and is in line with Vision Zero.”

▪️ “With the removal of speed cameras, I find drivers are already unsafely speeding.”

▪️ “Having lived in the UK where speeds are generally higher, I feel considerably less safe driving on the roads around Ottawa. People break the speed limit with impunity. Speeds don't need to increase – enforcement does!”

▪️ “It ain’t the speed limit, it’s the number of cars. Until transit is proper and there’s incentive to use other methods of travel this cities gridlock will get worse.”

▪️ “More vice signalling from Ford and the Conservatives, they love cars above safety. Higher speeds mean less reaction times by drivers, and worse injuries when collisions happen.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Dave Allston from the Kitchissippi Museum has another historical tale in the Kitchissippi Times: ‘The wild west of money in early Bytown’.

Allston describes what the first residents of Bytown had to do to conduct business, buy food, pay employees when the first bank would not show up until 16 years later.

The result was mayhem, with a mixture of Spanish coins, shillings, ‘letters of credit’ from merchants and banknotes from out-of-town banks that may have already gone out of business. It wan’t until 1842 when the Bank of Montréal opened a branch inside a Wellingston Street hotel.
