Not once have any of you knowledgeable Ottawa residents ever pointed out to us Darren that the first editor of the Journal was not prolific American actor Willem Dafoe, as we wrote for years, but in fact John Wesley Dafoe. For shame, Ottawa, for shame.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🚄 Alto, the proposed high-speed rail line, has bought its first property. Alto says that the property was already for sale and of ‘strategic interest’, but won’t say where it is located. – CBC
↪ The Québec farmers’ union, the Union des producteurs agricoles, asked the federal government to suspend the Alto project last Friday.
↪ The town of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, across the river from Hawkesbury, has voted to oppose the Alto project. Instead, the town council wants the money spent on municipal roads, culverts, and community facilities.
🏒 The Pembroke Lumber Kings are now the Royals because of a dispute with the league. Former owner Alex Armstrong was removed from the team by the Central Canadian Hockey League after he was accused of ‘harassing and mistreating players and failing to operate the business in an ethical manner’. The change in name is because the Lumber Kings name, in use since 1964, is owned by Armstrong and he is not allowing the new entity to use it. – Dylan Dyson at CTV
↪ Champion cyclist Michael Woods is temporarily ‘unretiring’ for the World Tour’s flagship race on September 27 in Montréal.
🏡 The CHEO Dream of a Lifetime Lottery has launched with a new Dream House for 2026. The 5,300 square foot house in Kanata has a 1920s speakeasy-inspired space with a fully equipped bar in the basement, a state-of-the-art theatre room, a fitness centre, and an elevator connecting all three floors. Bruce Deachman in the Ottawa Citizen has the strange story of how, in 1966, John Szigeti wrestled a black bear at Lansdowne Park for the chance to win a $3,000 prize.
No, that’s not the strange part. The strange part is that the promoters said Szigeti didn’t win, so he had to go to court to determine what ‘winning’ against a black bear actually meant.
