WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚨 The man who sent threats to Rideau-Vanier ward councillor Stéphanie Plant has been found guilty of uttering death threats and criminal harassment. Jason Claude Lamarche sent his first email in June 2024, telling Plante her ‘days are numbered’. Plante emailed back, informing Lamarche that his threat had spelt her name wrong.  – Aedan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen

🔎 The City has published maps of all new developments approved in each ward. It’s a little fussy – the maps are PDFs – but they are designed for regular people to look at. Take a look on the City’s website. – Jake Davies in West Carleton Online

🛏️ The province is building two new longterm care homes in Ottawa. The two homes will be located in Nepean and operated by  Southbridge Ottawa. Three hundred and eighty four beds are expected to be added.  – Province of Ontario

🌷 The Tulip Festival has published a daily tulipometer, indcating what stage the tulips are in so hopefully you won’t visit on the worst days. As of today, the tulips are at Bloomcon 5: early-season tulips have flowered. Mid-season tulips are in bud.

Also, this is our annual reminder that the National Capital Commission gives away the bulbs to non-profit groups after the Tulip Festival, but they never really tell people about it.

If your group would like some bulbs, send an official request with information such as ‘the name of the non-profit organization, the reason for the request, the contact information, and the quantity of bulbs requested’ to nccinfo@ncc-ccn.ca.

THE DAILY POLL

When will you plant your garden?

🔘 I’ve already started

🔘 I’ll be waiting until Victoria Day, next week, like a normal person

🔘 I have a dead thumb, my garden is steady year round

🔘 I have a great garden, it’s called Farm Boy

🔘 I don’t have room for a garden bed at my place, much less a back 40

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • We asked ‘Do you wait in line at restaurants?’

    • 7% Yes, I’m willing to wait at a popular place

    • 36% No, life is too short

    • 11% I suspect that most waits are artificial and are designed to make the resto seem popular

    • 27% I’d say no, but once I am there I can’t be bothered to go somewhere else

    • 19% There is never a queue in my kitchen

      Commentary

▪️ “They make you wait when they clearly have LOTS of empty tables that don't fill up while you are eating there despite their claimed Reserved status!”

▪️ “If there is a lineup and the wait is not too long (15 minutes or less) then ok, if not then there are many more choices rather than stay in a long lineup.”

▪️ “Waiting in line for a restaurant is about as dumb as waiting in line for an iPhone.”

▪️ “However, if I am going out, I make a reservation or go at 5pm… so I can be in bed by 9:30.”

▪️ “Working in restaurants made me patient on line ... dine out off-peak times to avoid ‘em .

▪️ “If the wait isn't that long, yes I’ll wait.”

▪️ “I can only go to certain restaurants due to being veggie and also having celiac disease. Ottawa really needs to take a page out of Vancouver Island’s book. They have gluten free & veggie restaurants!”

▪️ “I won’t line up for food. That’s what they do in prison.”

▪️ “I make reservation where I want to go. Having to wait in line to eat is weird idea and might tell a lot about management of place and respect of clientele.”

▪️ “I mostly eat at home, but if I do eat out, I make a reservation or go early to avoid the wait.”

▪️ “I will never wait more than 15 minutes for a table as I hate waiting and am usually too hungry. It is definitely a bummer when this happens but I just go somewhere else.”

▪️ “Wait in line for a table at a restaurant? As if. With so many options to try, why would we waste time standing around?”

▪️ “If it’s no longer than a 15min wait I’ll stick around but there’s no way the food is good enough to wait any longer than that.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

THE OTTAWAN has long been fascinated about the Ottawa Valley accent.

Rosanne Lake at Inside Ottawa Valley has gone out and asked locals and experts about the accent and whether or not it is being lost. Bonus: she includes a partial list of Ottawa Valley vocabulary.
