Our overall findings are stark. Almost no typical development scenarios currently pencil out
– A line from a report by Bloomberg Associates to the City’s finance and corporate services committee and the planning and housing committee. The report finds that residents in cheap apartments are not moving and expensive new apartments are staying vacant.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
π¨ The president of the Ottawa Police Association has been accused of sexual assault. Matthew Cox is being investigated by the provincial Special Investigations Unit over an allegation dating back to 2008. Cox has not been charged with anything and no allegation has been tested in court. The Association, the union for Ottawa’s police officers, says that the investigation is unrelated to his work and he remains president. – Kristy Nease at CBC
βͺ The Provincial government has introduced legislation allowing OC Transpo special constables to make arrests for drug use on public transit.
π Around 1,700 properties, including 500 farms, could be affected between Ottawa and Montréal by the proposed new Alto high speed train route. The vice-president of the Québec farmer’s union says ‘If it turns out to be true, it’s a lot’. – Mathieu Berger at Radio-Canada
π New neighbour alert. Former supreme court justice and war crimes prosecutor Louise Arbour will soon move into the New Edinburgh neighbourhood, to take residence in a 175 room semi-fixer upper at Rideau Hall. – Leyland Cecco in The Guardian
π» After 17 years, the final Gil’s Hootenanny was performed last week. Named in honour of the founding director of research at the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Gil Levine, the Hootenanny gathered every May Day to sing classic protest and labour songs. – Elina Ellis at Roots Music

THE DAILY POLL
Will you visit the Canadian Tulip Festival?
-
Previously in OTTAWAN polls:
-
We asked, ‘What industry do you think will provide the most jobs in future Ottawa–Gatineau?’
-
20% The Federal government will always be the most important industry in the Capital
-
11% The tech industry is expanding like crazy and will eventually exceed the number of jobs provided by the Federal government
-
27% It’s a wash. Either through Federal job cuts or AI slashing tech jobs, it’s a race to the bottom
-
13% Tourism is the dark horse, more and more people want to visit
-
29% It’ll be some combination of vape / cannabis / cell phone shops. They are taking over the streets
Commentary
βͺοΈ “I expect gov and tech will share the main chunk.”
βͺοΈ “Tech has been ready to take over Ottawa for several decades. Then the current fad dies. Manglement decides profits are most important and inovation dies, then the established companies are prime for takeover. and more jobs are cut.”
βͺοΈ “Or Turkish barbers.”
βͺοΈ “We can have another tech bust :D lets do Nortel 2.0 with AI.”
βͺοΈ “Feel bad for all the young people who will be struggling to get decent paying jobs to establish themselves and start a family.”
βͺοΈ “Don’t forget cuts to education and healthcare too! No jobs for anyone, huzzah. (And thus no money to pay for whatever service or trade work remains)”
