Flagrant self-promotion

Readers may remember a few months back when we talked about building our own newsletter mailer as we were unsatisfied with our existing service and the lack of Canadian alternatives. Many OTTAWAN readers volunteered to receive a second daily newsletter as we tested it out.

Our home built mailer did work well and we’ve been successfully sending out THE OTTAWAN using it ever since.

Well, we’re now opening up our mailer, which Darren has named Zedmail.com, to any web developer out there who is looking for a reliable mail delivery service.

This is where it gets geeky. Zedmail is for delivering newsletters and transactional emails (such as receipts, password reminders, etc) and is for companies that care about data sovereignty. It’s not something for regular folks. Ninety-nine percent of those reading this have no need to be aware of Zedmail’s existence whatsoever.

But if your company does use things like SendGrid, Mailgun, or Amazon SES and you are interested in using something Canadian-based, please check out Zedmail.

Kiyan Sunderji and Arianne Lalancette
Sunderji, from Calgary, was the first male across the line in Sunday’s Ironman Canada-Ottawa competition with a time of 8 hours 26 minutes and 53 seconds.
Québec City’s Lalancette was the first female across the line at nine hours nine minutes and 33 seconds.
Over 3,000 people competed in the event, which comprises a 3.8 kilometre swim, a 180 kilometre bike ride, and a 42.2 kilometre run.

📽️ Great timing. Despite the 70 mm IMAX screenings of The Odyssey selling out all shows across North America, the Museum of History shuttered their cinema June 30. Only nine other cinemas in Canada can show 70 mm IMAX films and none are in the Capital. While there are ‘IMAX’ cinemas here, they use digital projection instead of film.– Matteo Cimellaro in the Ottawa Citizen

🚇 Barrhaven East ward councillor Wilson Lo wants OC Transpo to cancel the E1 Express Bus. The E1 parallels the O Train Line 1 from Blair station to downtown and, according to the City Auditor, costs $1.3 million per year to run. Lo says the money should be reallocated elsewhere. However, Beacon Hill-Cyrville ward councillor Tim Tierney says the O Train is too unreliable and his constituents need the redundancy. – Michael McBean in the Ottawa Citizen

🧀 If you bought Grondines-brand cheese last month, it has been recalled. Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food says that that brand of cheese, sold at the Gatineau and Chelsea locations of La trappe à fromage de l’Outaouais likely contains the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. While the Ministry has no reported cases of illness, it says to not eat the cheese, even if it does not appear spoiled. – CBC

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Dave Allston of the Kitchissippi Museum has the fascinating forgotten story of one of Canada’s – and probably Ottawa’s – youngest First World War soldiers.
While the official age to enlist was 18 (sometimes 19 or 20, it varied), George Dudley of Hintonburg was 14. On his application, he gave a birthdate that showed he was nearly 19 and had signed approval from his parents who believed that there was no possibility that the army would accept him.
Dudley came home after his service, served again in the Second World War, and spent his entire post-military career until retirement as a waiter at the Carleton Tavern.
