WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL

It’s the Committee of Adjustment at 1:00 pm.

Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? Ireland

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💥 The Treasury Board has released plans on how 90 Federal departments will reduce their head counts. It’s too much detail to encapsulate, but the it’s all on the 2026-2027 Departmental Plans website. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🚄 The CBC has an explainer on why the O Train wire keeps breaking. Basically, ‘It’s not just the arcing, or the ice buildup. It’s the location’. – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

🏵️ The First Nations Child & Family Caring Society is seeking nominations for its first leadership award, named in honour of Raymond Shingoose.  The $2,000 award will recogize a person employed by a First Nation, First Nation Child and Family Services Agency, or First National regional/national child and family organization whose whose work reflects the honour, wisdom, and long-standing commitment demonstrated by Raymond Shingoose. Deadline is June 1. – First Nations Child and Family Caring Society

✨ Transport Canada is asking for your opinion on vehicle headlights and glare at night. This isn’t Ottawa specific at all – but THE OTTAWAN is certainly of the opinion that the headlights on some newer vehicles are absolutely blinding at night.

Let Transport Canada know what you think here. The survey runs until April 20. – Transport Canada

THE DAILY POLL

Do you find the headlights of cars annoying at night?

🔘 Yes, they are like laser beams

🔘 No, I don't really notice anything unusual

🔘 It’s just the way of the world. Cars, streetlights, and lightbulbs just get brighter.

🔘 That, and people these days dress like bums, music is just noise, and those lousy kids won't get off my lawn

  • Previously in ottawan polls:

  • We asked, ‘Do you think the Alto high speed line should follow Highway 401?’

    • 7% Yes, it will follow the natural path of population

    • 8% No, towns along the 401 already have both VIA Rail service and the 401 itself

    • 23% Farmland and cows can’t vote, let the route go where it is fastest not politically expedient

    • 62% Oh bless, OTTAWAN. You believe that Alto will actually be built

    •
      Commentary

▪️ When will this actually happen?? In 2050??

▪️ It doesn't matter where you build it, some group will be protesting it!

▪️ Build what’s fastest: that’s the point. Those in smaller townships can take VIA to Alto (and the city bus to VIA, if necessary). Why duplicate an existing network when you can instead make it more comprehensive?

▪️ The costs will explode. Land value is much higher there and so much more infrastructure conflicts. You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. People quickly forget how disruptive was the building of highways ...

▪️ The unofficial Mayor of Toronto really has me steamed! Alto should use up as much farm land as needed for the huge benefit it provides. The land owners will be fairly compensated and Ottawa will finally get good rail service.

▪️ Once again our dear leader forgets that the city of Ottawa exists.

▪️ Won’t happen in my lifetime ... don’t hire the LRT contractors.

▪️ Rural voters will always complain that they’re paying for services they don’t use, which is a horribly selfish take. Using the 401 doesn’t change that, and it’s redundant.

▪️ The province should be working with Transport Canada to encourage Canadian National and VIA Rail to resolve the speed limits imposed on VIA Rail trains. This would make an immediate difference to rail service throughout Ontario.

▪️ Please let the engineers do their thing!!

▪️ It should use the new interprovincial bridge that has been in the works for the past forty years!

▪️ High Speed Rail in Ontario, or elsewhere in Canada, will only happen when hell freezes over or a couple of years after that!
