  • 🧀 Road Trip: You know summer is truly on the way when Back Forty Artisan Cheese opens the shop and bistro for the season. Starting this Friday May 29, the operation is open Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 8:00 pm to serve artisan cheese, meats, sourdough pizzas, and products from local producers. Also: save the date for the farm's annual free event Curds & Cooks on Saturday June 27. (Mississippi Station)

STATISTICS OTTAWA

NUMBER

  • $10 million

  • The amount of provincial money that the City wants to divert to a ByWard Market wishlist.

  • The money was provided to the City to pedestrianize William Street but council paused that earlier this year. It can’t spend the money on other things without authorization — and the deadline is next year.

  • – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

OTTAWAN OF THE DAY

  • David Bellerive

  • The senior officer of finances at the University of Ottawa has taken it upon himself to start a campaign in support of the Québec - Montréal - Ottawa - Toronto high speed rail project.

  • Called Go Alto, he says ‘We feel that the big issue right now is that it’s easy for people to say that they support it, but I don’t think they feel there’s a clear way for them to express that support’.

  • – Mia Jensen in the Ottawa Business Journal

QUOTE

“

  • It is anticipated that this will cause a series of impacts to clients, including increased likelihood of overdose and subsequent adverse health outcomes, such as brain injury and death

WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL

Emergency Preparedness and Protective Services Committee
Thursday, May 28 at 9:30 am

  • Ottawa Fire Services 2025 Annual Report
  • Councillor’s Report (Councillor S. Plante) – Strengthening Protections Against Construction Encroachment and Enforcing Committee of Adjustment Conditions

Agenda

Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? None

City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚨 The CHEO Foundation is ‘dismayed’ that a former employee has apparently ‘misdirected’ funds. While CHEO has contacted police, it did not say who or how much money is involved. – CBC

🍃 The National Capital Commission wants your opinion on its Greenbelt Master Plan. Created in the 1950s to ‘protect the rural land bordering the Capital from urban sprawl. It has since become the largest publicly owned greenbelt in the world’. The online survey is open until June 8. – National Capital Commission

📺 Québec National Assembly urges the National Hockey League to permit screenings of the Canadiens at the Slush Puppy Centre in Gatineau. Because Gatineau is in the 80 km exclusive TV zone of the Sens, the League won’t permit public screenings of the Canadiens’ run for the cup — despite the Sens already being on golf duty. – Montréal Gazette

🚊 Double-car trains will return to O Train Line 1 on June 8. The trains had been running with one car since January after the discovery of issues with the carriage axel assemblies.  – Ted Raymond at CTV

↪ Historic Streetcar 696, which once plied the Rockcliffe Park –Britannia Park route, has found a new home at the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario in Smiths Falls.

↪ A double decker OC Transpo bus fell off a flatbed truck and rolled into the side of the Farm Boy at the Ottawa Train Yards yesterday.

THE DAILY POLL

Are you in favour of supervised drug consumption sites?

🔘 Yes, they save lives

🔘 No, they encourage drug use

🔘 I’m fine with them – elsewhere

🔘 Wherever they are located, they bring crime and chaos

🔘 What do you mean? There are no plans to ban bars or vape stores ...

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Have you ever called 911?’

    • 19% No

    • 71% Yes

    • 7% Yes, but by accident

    • 2% I”m no snitch

    • 1% I have had reason to but I can never remember the number

    • Commentary

▪️ “Very happy not to have ever had a need to call 911!”

▪️ “A fire alarm at my last apartment building that kept ringing until I figured someone needed to call it in.”

▪️ “Yes, for ambulances for family members. They came promptly and accessed the situation for either transport or medical attention. Never had to call for the police.”

▪️ “Technically my older sister (then about nine) called 911 and then hung up and blamed it on me (5) and my brother (7). Sister didn’t get in trouble, but the younger two of us still did — hauled down to the station to apologize in person.”

▪️ “Yes! Saved a dude’s life once so that was cool.”

▪️ “We thought our son was choking. He was maybe a year old and woke up making a godawful noise. Called 911. It was the croup. I’d done everything for choking and forgot what the croup sounded like 🤦🏼‍♀️”

▪️ “I had an appendix issue ... they arrived within 10 mins  ... surgery within two hours ... great service from those gentlemen. Respect for a challenging job.”

▪️ “A long long time ago ... we had some challenges with one of our kids ....I started to dial 911 and I hung up. If you dial them and hang up they call you back. Luckily our daughter has turned out great ... just a bump in the road.”

▪️ “Unfortunately I have had a few calls to 911 Ambulance and always had good support on line and quick response.”

▪️ “Called when my husband needed urgent medical assistance and another time to notify of a potential serious mental health situation that I witnessed.”

▪️ “Took 20 minutes for the police to respond to Bolton Street, where two people (non-residents) were injecting drugs in an interior apartment stairwell. I guess that was nothing to get excited about.”

▪️ “I’ve had several occasions for my hubby and they are the best of the best ... both the 911 operator and the paramedics ... a big thank you to all.”

▪️ “Once.”

▪️ “Someone needs to test it.”

▪️ “It took almost two hours to come. This was about two years ago.”

▪️ “Twice!”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

As part of THE OTTAWAN’s neverending quest to keep our city abreast of everything Heated Rivalry related, we bring you this: pre-orders for Province of Canada's much anticipated, limited-edition fleece jacket inspired by Heated Rivalry will go live on June 3.

The price will not be revealed until that day, so assume it will be eye-wateringly expensive.

Despite some of the action being set in Ottawa, recent reports say that the filming of season two will take place in Montréal and Toronto with no mention of character Shane Hollander’s hometown.
