WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🍺 Kitchissippi Brewing is closing its doors next Friday. Owner Paul Meek has posted on the website that the brewery has been losing money for some time, putting them in ‘the awkward position of not having enough money to brew more beer, which results in not having enough beer to make more money’.
The company also runs coffee, beer, and wine bar The Commons on Sparks Street. It remains open, but the beer will be supplied by other craft breweries.– ‘Thank you and sorry’
🏒 Sens players Jake Sanderson and Brady Tkachuk say they respect women hockey players after all. The two, who played for the US Olympic team, were on a video call with US president Donald Trump where players were recorded laughing after Trump said he would have to ‘invite the women’s team to the White House, too’. – Sarah Petz at CBC
↪ The Sens and the Montreal Canadiens will play a friendly match September 21 to celebrate Saint-Boniface winning the Hockeyville competion. The game itself will be played in Trois-Rivières, as Saint-Boniface’s arena needs the $250,000 prize that the town won.
🚊 Ottawa Valley residents tell their stories of what it has been like in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico during the unrest. Some said ‘war zone’ and ‘terrifying’ but another said her resort is ‘keeping up the ‘vacation vibe’. – Aedan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen
🎷 The Ottawa Citizen takes a look at some of the eccentric acts playing at Bluesfest next July. Hank Azeria from The Simpsons has a Bruce Springsteen tribute act, Here Come the Mummies play dressed as mummies, Rev Run is Run from Run-DMC, and the Longest Johns sing sea shanties. – Sofia Misenheimer in the Ottawa Citizen
🎙️ The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is seeking application for an Indigenous radio station in Ottawa. Ottawa did have an Indigenous-led station from 2000 to 2025 but the most recent operator ceased operations last year. – Tara Gesner and Olivia Barrett at Inside Ottawa Valley
THE DAILY POLL
When would you prefer to receive THE OTTAWAN in your inbox?
▪️ “Stick with Tradition. People who are complaining about the players visiting the White House would be complaining if the President didn’t invite them.”
▪️ “Hated him before he kissed Trump’s butt.”
▪️ “Total embarrassment when prominent sports figures like this cozy up to a dictator who has made it publicly known that he wants to take over Canada. The country that he gets paid millions of dollars to play hockey in & live in. Not cool.”
▪️ “When he’s in Ottawa he supports the team and the city.”
▪️ “Very inappropriate to meet with Trump. At least the women’s team showed some class.”
▪️ “It’s disgusting that the male hockey players laughed at Trump’s disgusting joke about female hockey players. This misogyny has to stop and has to start with these players.”
▪️ “I missed yesterday’s survey. I like both coffee and tea. I especially like Equator coffee and Brown Bag Coffee Roasters.”
▪️ “He already suffered having to be in the same room as the orange one.”
▪️ “A proud American patriot playing on a Canadian team in these times is not great chemistry.”
▪️ “Let him have his 15 minutes of fame or is that infamy given who he is meeting?”
▪️ “He’s in the same league as Gretzky now ! Not a good league to be in.”
▪️ “I’m American. I think it’s probably exciting/overwhelming to meet the POTUS, whether you like him or not. Some of the things that were said by the men’s team were vile and classic Old Boys Club crap. I hope their future selves are as embarrassed as I am.”
▪️ “Its all PR no matter how you look at it. US business has bought the NHL, and the only thing that matters is money.”
▪️ “He should be given free agent status so he can be traded to an American team and we can get another great Canadian.”
▪️ “Laughing at misogynistic comments, meeting with a dictator: what kind of role model is this?”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
The latest edition of the City’s podcast, OttaTalk, gives the mic over to City archivist Paul Henry who attempts to answer the question: ‘What was Ottawa like in 1826’?
‘Ottawa in its infancy sound[s] more like the wild west than the cosmopolitan world class capital it is today. What was the Stony Monday Riot all about and what else can we learn with a simple trip to the Ottawa Archives?’ – City of Ottawa
