STATISTICS OTTAWA

NUMBER

  • $350

  • The amount of money that the Ottawa Patriots Baseball Team in Blackburn Hamlet pays monthly for a portable toilet at Tauvette Park because the City won’t.

  • – Kimberley Fowler at CTV

BARRY’S BAYSIAN OF THE DAY

  • Carley Fortune

  • Before she became a best-selling romance novel writer and before being an editor at The Globe and Mail, Toronto Life, and Chatelaine, Fortune was a kid growing up in Barry’s Bay, where her parents owned the Madawaska Valley Inn.

  • Every Year After, an eight episode series based on her debut novel of the same name, premieres on June 10 on Prime Video. Fortune says that she vetoed an early script that set the show in Barry’s Bend, Wisconsin and ensured it was explicity set in Canada.

  • – Elizabeth Egan in the New York Times

QUOTE

“

  • We’ve been getting a lot of travelers that come up from Raleigh to the Ottawa area

– Ogdensburg International Airport manager Charlie Garrelts, thrilled that new renovations and an airline partner have greatly increased the number of passengers passing through his patch.

The airport, just over an hour from Ottawa, has only one airline, Breeze, which services Raleigh-Durham, Washington, and Orlando.  It’s interesting that on the Breeze website, Ogdensburg is listed as Ogdensburg, NY / Ottawa, ON.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚧 Carling Avenue has been voted as Ottawa’s worst road for the 21st year. The annual campaign by the Canadian Automobile Association didn’t put any Ottawa road on Ontario’s 10 worst roads this year but Carling Avenue was number four in 2023.  – Josh Pringle at CTV

↪ Queensway drivers have another weekend of construction.  Two left lanes will close on the westbound 417 between O’Connor and Preston streets, the left lane will close on the eastbound 417 between Preston and Kent streets, and the on-ramp from O’Connor to the westbound 417 will be closed.

↪ Elevators on the O Train Line 1 have had 435 unplanned closures between September 2024 and February 2026.

🚊 Mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette is ‘hopeful’ after Prime Minister Mark Carney mentioned Gatineau’s tram project. Marquis-Bissonette said that she was worried about the future of the project when the province transferred it to the new Mobilité Infra Québec agency, led by former OC Transpo general manager Renée Amilcar. – CBC

↪ Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says it is not ‘unusual’ that the City signed a non-disclosure agreement with the Alto high speed rail Crown corporation. Sutcliffe says the agreement does not give the City any secret information but is about ‘the properties owned by the City of Ottawa that may be affected, not the entire project’.

🏒 Ottawa Charge have protected three players from being absorbed by league expansion. Gwyneth Philips, Ronja Savolainen, and Rebecca Leslie are all guaranteed to return. As the Professional Women’s Hockey League is adding four teams next season – Detroit, Hamilton, Las Vegas, and San Jose – the new cities can select players from existing teams. – Emma Weller at CBC

🗳️ Ottawa Civic Election

‘A New Era of Responsible City Spending. My platform to get the value for money we deserve from our taxes. ’ – Mayoral candidate Neil Saravanamuttoo

THE DAILY POLL

Are you in favour of the plan to link the downtowns of Gatineau and Ottawa by tram?

🔘 Yes, it will be transformative

🔘 No, the money could be better spent on improving existing transit

🔘 What we need is a unified transit agency that will cover both Ottawa and Gatineau

🔘 We need better and more bridges instead

🔘 This will be a boon for the under 19s/over 18s to drink in Gatineau who won’t have to stagger back across the bridge like I did

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Do you invest in any of these Ottawa-based companies?

    • 12% Shopify

    • 7% Kinaxis

    • 8% Calian Group

    • 8% Telesat

    • 65% Beavertails, but not in stock purchases

    • Commentary

▪️ “I invest in Beavertails, it’s a skating on the canal tradition kind of investment if that counts

▪️ “Remember when there was a savoury Beavertail? Bring back garlic butter and parm!”

▪️ “We should all be so lucky to be able to invest our ‘extra’ money. I love Beavertails though!”

▪️ “There should have been a no option. Beavertails are overpriced. Giant Tiger is cool.”

▪️ “And K-D!”

▪️ “Really wish that I had invested in Shopify when we first met Tobi and a few of the others back in 2009 or 2010 – would be happily retired by now instead of slogging away in an office building!”

▪️ “Shopify but through SHPE which is the high yield covered call version of it that pays me a 19% yield or $273 / month. Let it go up or down, who cares. I get paid. Passive income life is great!”

Faces magazine, the only Ottawa magazine that promises an actual face on each edition, has ‘4 Must Visit Hiking Trails Near Ottawa’.

In order of easiest to hardest, they are: King Mountain, the Skyline Trail, Luskville Falls Trail, and the Wolf Trail, which, satisfyingly, is a dog friendly route.
