Hello Ottawa

No, your eyes were no deceiving you, there was no OTTAWAN yesterday.

We apologize for that, circumstances intervened. We’ll have a full edition, complete with a special Thursday Dining + Drinking Update tomorrow.

– Martha and Darren

In Today’s Edition

→ The City is buying the Sondor The O'Connor hotel for $45 million

→ Listen to the free panel discussion, Thinking Out Loud Together: Why Civil Discourse Matters More than Ever,  at Library and Archives Canada today

→ Deals of the Day on flour and workshops from Almanac Grains, the makeup removal bar from BKIND, and instruments of all sorts from Steve’s Music

STATISTICS OTTAWA

NUMBER

  • $61,730

  • – The amount of money that the Ottawa Police Service’s Polar Plunge event raised for the Special Olympics last Saturday. Two hundred and thirty-five people participated, including Chief Eric Stubbs, by raising money for the honour of dropping oneself into a freezing tub.

  • Paula Tran in the Ottawa Citizen

OTTAWANS OF THE DAY

  • Steph Barlow and Wesley Goodhoofd

  • The duo, who call themselves ‘data nerds’ have created a new start up, LapDrop, that handles the logistics of getting equipment to remote workers. Similar companies exist in the United States but international shipping becomes complex and they charge in US dollars.

  • – Marissa Galko in the Ottawa Business Journal

QUOTE

  • Obviously, we're not going to put people [in] if we don't have space. That’s common sense.

– President of the Treasury Board Shafqat Ali, attempting to reassure Federal public employees that when they return to the office four days per week later this year, they will have someplace to sit.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

πŸ“‹ Ottawa’s Planned Parenthood service has reopened after a three month hiatus. The charity, which provides reproductive and sexual health counselling and referrals at no charge, chose to close its doors in November to get a handle on its finances. Grants from the Canadian Women’s Foundation and the City made the difference. – Anchal Sharma and CBC

πŸ›οΈ The City is buying the Sonder The O’Connor hotel for $45 million. The former hotel at 377 O’Connor Street will be used to house families in transition to permanent housing. The hotel as it stands has 128 apartment suites, 74 studios, 51 one bedrooms, two two-bedroom, and one three-bedroom suites’. Most of the cost will be paid by the Federal government.  – Josh Pringle at CTV

πŸ›οΈ Bluefest has announced its full line-up for the July 9 - 19 event. To help celebrate Ottawa 200, Bluesfest has redoubled its efforts to bring in the best of blues music with Limp Bizkit, Gwen Stenfani, and The Guess Who headlining. On deck are those cult bluesmen Sheryl Crow, Cypress Hill, and Death from Above 1979.  – Apartment 613

      Commentary

β–ͺ️ Denser core, no sprawl: better land use, less pollution, better services for residents.

β–ͺ️ Can I vote none of the above?

β–ͺ️ Hand Odawa back to the Algonquin Anishnaabe people, they’ll do a better job than Sutcliffe ever will.

β–ͺ️ Uh oh ... how *does* one pronounce Somerset?

β–ͺ️ Can we let 24 Sussex return to nature?

β–ͺ️ Seriously consider including ALL the politicians – at all levels – in the return to nature deal.
