WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💰 The City is considering a property tax levy to catch up on neglected infrastructure. The City believes that it will be $3.8 billion short over the next ten years on the cost of maintaining existing infrastructure. Worse, that doesn’t include water and sewer infrastructure, which has its own taxes. – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

↪ CTV has gone through the reports and pulled out some of the things that the City paid for last year, such as $724,490 for two years of wooden snow pickets, $26,982 for 1,800 OC Transpo bus shelter maps, and $73,000 to conduct a ‘return to work and school advertising campaign for Transit Services’.

🚲 Tickets for the Mayor’s Annual Canada Day Celebration for Seniors will be available starting Monday. Held July 1 – obviously – at the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre, the event includes breakfast, live entertainment, and door prizes. Call or email ASAP on Monday as the tickets always go fast. Celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary? Let the Mayor’s people know – VIP tickets are available.  – City of Ottawa

🦅 The Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre has rehabilated a rare patient, an endangered golden eagle. The bird was found near death May 2 in a forest in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, possibly succumbing to an older injury. The unnamed eagle was released last Saturday. ‘[T]here’s a lot more personal protective equipment that we have to wear’, said the manager about the bird’s care. – Natalie van Rooy at CTV  Donations

🛒 Every week, @stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. This week, he highlights eggs ($4.88/18 at Metro, $4.99/18 at Sobeys), pork tenderloin ($2.99/lb  at FreshCo), and salmon ($9.99/lb at Farm Boy). – /Ottawa

🗳️ Civic Election

  • ‘Why I’m supporting Alex Lawson — and you should too’ – Quito Maggi in Compass Ottawa

THE DAILY POLL

Do you think the new NATO Defence Bank should be located in Ottawa/Gatineau?

🔘 Yes, this is the heart of defence planning and diplomatic relations

🔘 No, Toronto is the centre of finance and that availability of expertise should be the deciding factor

🔘 Premier Doug Ford wants it in Toronto, so I say put it in Ottawa

🔘 Premier Doug Ford wants it in Toronto, and when was the last time he made a slapdash decision?

🔘 The last time I tried to get a loan for a tank and a heap of berets at my credit union, I was turned down so I am all for more competition

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Do you take VIA Rail?’

    • 65% Yes, if I’m going to Toronto, Montréal, or Quebec City it is my first choice

    • 7% Yes, I take it for long trips rather than flying when I can

    • 16% No, too unreliable or too costly or both

    • 3% They pulled up the tracks to where I want to go

    • 9% If it was $10 to Kingston, I’d take it all the time

    • Commentary

▪️ “I love taking VIA and take it often to Toronto. I just wish it was more reliable.”

▪️ “Love the trains. We need more.”

▪️ “The delays are not much fun, especially the 2:30 and 3:30 trains from Toronto.”

▪️ “I wished I would take the train more. But flying is faster, driving is cheaper and usually faster. I just struggle to see the value in the train with their current offering. ALTO would change that.”

▪️ “Train is always my first choice even if it’s slower. If it can make it in less than 24 hours I'll take it.”

▪️ “VIA Rail is great, especially on the Montréal route. We don’t drive so it’s either train or bus, and the latter is much less comfortable.”

▪️ “None of the above. It’s expensive and I can drive to my destination in less time. I also then have to arrange transportation in the city I’m headed to. I like it in principle, but it’s poor in practice.”

▪️ “I liked it when it was more reliable. Multi hour delays were unheard of the 40 years I took it, excluding the last 3 years, where long delays seem to be common. It makes me question if taking the train is a reliable plan.”

▪️ “I love going by rail. I welcome and can't wait for high speed rail. Took one from Shanghai to Bejing — 4 hours! Better than driving or flying. Cost was very reasonable. Sometimes you have to look to the future and embrace beneficial change.”

▪️ “I’ll always take the train in the corridor, even if it’s a bit late, I don’t generally mind. So much nicer than having to be at the airport 90 minutes early for a flight.”

▪️ “I take it although it seems to always arrive behind schedule lately.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

You’ll feel better about the powers-that-be* after reading Michela Rosano’s story in Canadian Geographic, ‘How swimming returned to downtown Ottawa’.

Rosano tells of the old fears of swimming at  River House and Dow’s Lake swimming areas and how it's just not an issue any longer.
