WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

πŸš„ The Ontario Federation of Agriculture and l’Union des producteurs agricoles want the Alto high speed rail programme paused. At its annual general meeting last week, farmers voted to request governments pause the project until it can be guaranteed that agricultural land will not be affected.– Ottawa Construction News

β†ͺ The owners of Gibbs Honey apiary in Vankleek Hill say the Alto project is ‘sure to disrupt the life cycle of many species, including bees’.

♻️ Replacement recycling bins will now be delivered to homes, residents no longer need to pick them up. A few weeks ago, the new contractor for recycling in the city, Miller Waste Systems, said it would not deliver replacements for old bins unlike what the City used to do. The company has changed its mind. The company also reiterated that the black boxes are being phased out and all new boxes will be blue – although residents must still separate the recycling. – Dave Charbonneau at CTV

πŸͺ The Community Environmental Projects Grant Programme has $204,000 to award organizations  interested in ‘undertaking small-scale, community-based initiatives that support an environmentally sustainable Ottawa’. Deadline to apply is April 10 and all projects must be completed by June 30, 2027.  – Stittsville Central

THE DAILY POLL

Is this it? Is it Spring now?

πŸ”˜ No, this weather tricks you into dropping your guard. It’ll get worse.

πŸ”˜ Yes, I have already had my snow tires removed. Why?

πŸ”˜ I’m hoping for a few more snowfalls

πŸ”˜ Ottawa weather is so predictable, the next few weeks will be gorgeous

πŸ”˜ Did you not listen to our groundhog, emu, and cat betters? They said six more weeks of winter.

  • Previously in ottawan polls:

  • We asked, ‘How bilingual are you?’

    • 12% Fully fluent in both English and French

    • 23% ‘Un peu’. At least enough to understand that means ‘a bit’

    • 16% Not at all

    • 20% Cereal box French. Which is useful at breakfast but useless when trying to argue a parking ticket in Gatineau

    • 29% Why do you assume bilingual means English and French, OTTAWAN? Do better

    •
      Commentary

β–ͺ️ Well Enough for the PS bilingual bonus!
β–ͺ️ Bilingual in the official languages of Canada, and that is French and English of course!
β–ͺ️ I took French immersion in an English Province. Graduated with a provincially issued bilingual certificate. Moved to Ottawa, learned I was not bilingual at all. C’est la vie.
β–ͺ️ I’m fully bilingual and it was never a problem for me since at home growing up we listen to both French and English radio and TV station.
β–ͺ️ Trilingual anyone? That's the way to go!
β–ͺ️ Biggest regret is not being bilingual in Canada.
β–ͺ️ Growing up in Ottawa made that an imperative! Life is so much richer with the addition of languages!
β–ͺ️ French services were supposed to be available for people. Not everyone can learn the language. I come from a family who has tried but cannot.
β–ͺ️ Born and raised in Ottawa. I am French ... don't even remember learning English ... fluent oral and written in both languages.

β–ͺ️ Always handy to have both official languages especially in the Nation’s Capital!
β–ͺ️ During a recent volunteering sessions, I have been deemed the bilingual individual to serve the customers. By telling them ‘Je comprends plus que je parle’ and we all got along just fine.
β–ͺ️ Growing up in a small WASP town in eastern Ontario, I remember when the first two francophone families moved there. With a high school French teacher who spoke French like John Diefenbaker, I had little chance of mastering bilingualism.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Marley Dickinson in Canadian Runner has the interesting story of ‘How an Ottawa run club became a meeting place for diplomats’. What began as a search for community grew into a weekly gathering point for diplomats training for Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.
