THE DAILY POLL
How bilingual are you?
-
Previously in ottawan polls:
-
We asked, ‘How often do you think the head of OC Transpo should take transit?’
-
21% They should assume that all their travel will be by transit, and note when it is not possible
-
26% How could we expect any public official to adequately their job if we forced them to take OC Transpo?
-
11% Police and firefighters don’t take emergency vehicles to work, OC Transpo chiefs should travel however they want
-
6% They should be assigned a minibus to commute, picking up passengers on the way
-
36% We should only appoint transit chiefs without driver’s licenses
-
Commentary
▪️ “If they’re unwilling to use the service daily like tens of thousands of Ottawans, maybe they shouldn't be running transit in our city.”
▪️ “All City staff downtown including counselors should always take transit.”
▪️ “I don’t take transit. Only for special events, every couple of years. Yet on my current tax bill, it says I pay $1,400 per year for transit.”
▪️ “If you truly want to understand the problems we have then you need to lead by example and darn well use the service.”
▪️ “It would matter a lot less how the head of OC Transpo got around if the system worked well. More people would use public transit if it was the best way to get around.”
▪️ “‘You can’t run transit from your car or from behind a desk’, as a non-driving transit chief once said …”
▪️ “Would you elect a premier that doesn’t live in the province? No. If you’re in charge of something you should have to use that thing and live with the consequences of the decisions you make.”
▪️ “Another One Rides the Bus (with a nod to Weird Al).”
▪️ “Sitting at a desk doesn’t give the actual picture or experience so I definitely think they should, but don’t shut doors to passengers and make it a photo op day ...”
▪️ “If they don’t use the product, why should I?”
▪️ “How are you supposed to make decisions about something that you have zero experience with on a daily basis?”
▪️ “As should all city councillors.”
▪️ “Actually using transit is the only way to see how bad it is. They should take different bus routes and travel in peak and off peak. The Mayor and city councillors too. For realsies. Not just photo ops.”
▪️ “I don’t believe that the person in charge of the public transportation should be using the bus, it’s not going to change the problems that people are having and the one that are driving those bus.”
▪️ “It’s ridiculous that they don’t. And I also think bus drivers should have to do the same.”
▪️ “If he had to use it, it would get fixed!”
▪️ “If they feel the pain of using OC Transpo, maybe they will finally feel motivated to do something about it.”

The community newspaper of Mississippi Mills, the Millstone News, is inviting its readers to to join the Goose lottery. Tickets are free.
Players must pick a date between March 7 and April 30, and indicate morning or evening. The winner will be the person who correctly picks the date and time the first goose lands on Corkery Pond. Flying across it does not count.
The grand prize is a 1967 silver dollar with a flying goose on the front face. Second and third prizes are a bag of goose dung scraped off writer Richard van Duyvendyk’s lawn in June, who says it is ‘excellent fertilizer for the garden and a distinctive perfume that will draw attention to your flower garden’.
