WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL

Community Services Committee
Tuesday, June 23 at 9:30 am

  • Status Update – Community Services Committee Inquiries and Motions for the period ending June 5, 2026

Agenda

Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? None

City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏒 Sens captain Brady Tkachuk is heading to the Florida Panthers after requesting to be traded. In return, the Sens will receive three first-round draft picks and a second-round pick. Tkachuk’s brother Matthew already plays for the Panthers. – William Eltherington at CTV

🌷 The Canadian Tulip Festival says funding cuts are putting its future at risk. This year saw approximately 50 per cent of its government funding – about $200,000 – to be cut, forcing the Festival to be streamlined. While the National Capital Commission plants the tulips, the Festival does all the programming. – Amanda McLeod in the Kitchissippi Times

🚄 The Federal government has told Alto to consider adding Kingston. The high speed rail plan was originally conceived to connect Québec City – Trois-Rivières – Montréal – Laval – Ottawa – Peterborough – Toronto. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon says that based on what he has heard from public consultations, he wants a southern route and Kingston considered. – Christopher Reynolds and David Baxter in the Canadian Press

🚨 An Ottawa Police Service staff sergeant has been charged in Oakville after a vehicle collision. The staff sergeant, who was off-duty, was charged with one count of assault. – Ottawa Police Service

🗳️ Ottawa Civic Election

  • ‘Brigitte Pellerin and Evan H. Potter discuss the past week in the Ottawa election campaign’ – City of Ottawa Politics
  • ‘Change Does Not Come for Free’ – Mayoral candidate Neil Saravanamuttoo
  • ‘Lawson gains ground as Sutcliffe maintains lead in Ottawa mayoral race: poll’ – Sydney Ko at iPolitics

THE DAILY POLL

Should funding for the Tulip Festival be increased?

🔘 Yes, the festival and its story is one of the things that make Ottawa unique

🔘 No, they are just flowers – they grow whether you spend money or not

🔘 I support the Festival but it has strayed from its core activities into too many other events

🔘 I support the Festival but it has strayed from its core activity – celebrating removing a floor of the Civic Hospital from Canadian sovereignty

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Will you follow the Charge to the Canadian Tire Centre?

    • 27% Yes, I’ll follow the Charge to the ends of the Earth!

    • 25% No, it’s too remote/too difficult for travelling by transit

    • 11% No, it’s too big – the charm was the intimate arena

    • 37% Anything that makes Lansdowne 2.0 look bad gets support from me

    • Commentary

▪️ “The map says it’s about 24 KM to walk to the CTC from Centretown, so it’s probably about as fast to walk there as taking the bus.”

▪️ “Also love the Charge!!”

▪️ “I live in West Carleton so will finally buy a season ticket.”

▪️ “I’ll follow them to the CTC and hopefully to Lebreton thereafter. Go Charge Go!”

▪️ “City Council is so out of touch on Lansdowne 2.0 plan. Nobody likes it. It has serious flaws but they don’t care.”

▪️ “It still defies belief that the new Lansdowne will have a smaller capacity, when, in its previous incarnation, it regularly sold out for a winning team that will now move away. Way to go, City Council, you know best.”

▪️ “Honestly love the Charge and would go frequently but I can't stack the cost of transit/carpool on top of the tickets when prior it was walking/biking distance the $6 pop is already insane :')”

▪️ “Further evidence that Lansdowne 2.0 was a bad idea!”

▪️ “Much as I hate the CTC I like the Charge more. Hopefully it will only be for a few years.”

▪️ “I’ve loved watching the Charge downtown, but there’s just no way to pop over to the game after work on a weekday when it’s in Kanata. Sad to let my season’s ticket go but what choice do I have if I can’t get there?”

▪️ “Happy that the team is doing well and interest is high. However, with the travel time and hassle getting to the CT Centre, I will no longer attend. 🤔”

▪️ “Once Le Breton has been developed the Charge will be back downtown, in the meantime, Kanata has some great pre-game dining spots:)”

▪️ “Yes, I will follow them to Hamilton!”

▪️ “I’ve been a STH from the beginning and I’m not giving up now (and also both places are just as far for me 🤷🏻‍♀️)!”

▪️ “Waste of money. Funds could be used elsewhere.”

▪️ “I’m not interested in going all the way to Kanata from Orleans. Perhaps I’ll return when they move the arena downtown.”

▪️ “Lansdowne 2.0 is a clown show. It continues to cause problems for itself. It’s like the Emperor’s New Clothes but for real estate/sports.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Well-known magazine Travel + Leisure has an interesting feature: ‘This Charming Canadian City Is Less Than 2 Hours From the U.S.—and It’s the Perfect Summer Escape’. And it’s us!

It rounds up the usual restaurants and things to do, but we did like the line ‘In Ottawa, you can paddleboard across the city’s canal and end up enjoying one of the country’s best tasting menus’ because, who in the Capital hasn’t done just that? (And we think it is Atelier to which he is referring. We haven’t checked if the coatcheck accepts paddleboards).
