WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🛫 City Council will not overrule the City Manager’s mandate to bring civic employees back to the office full time . Wendy Stephanson had ordered those employees who still work remotely to come into the office full time starting January. The City says that 93 per cent of City workers already come to the workplace five days per week.
The policy does not affect City Councillors, who can attend meetings remotely if they prefer.. – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC
🗳️ The Federal government is having trouble selling off surplus office space because return-to-work policies has meant putting some back into service. The government had expected to save $3.9 billion over ten years by reducing office space, but now plans to reduce by only one third. – The Canadian Press
📢 The winner of the first Ottawa Ironman competion has had her bike stolen. While Aliisa Heiskanen was taking a run in Gatineau Park, her triathalon bike was stolen despite being locked in the trunk of her car. She’s offering a $500 reward. – Katelyn Wilson at CTV

-
21% No, I’ve seen dying leaves before

Commentary
▪️ “The 417 on the way to/from Montréal had a surprisingly gorgeous display of autumn foliage this weekend. I also get to see it as I drive around town or at the cottage, so no need for a special trip just for that”
– This edition of THE OTTAWAN is partially written from Montréal. Martha and Darren needed to pick up a package there this morning – and indeed the leaves on the 417 are gorgeous right now.
▪️ “Gatineau Park - here we come!”
▪️ “Not really going anywhere as my neighbourhood trees turn beautiful colours every Autumn. We lost many during the Derecho but still enough to make a lovely canopy”
▪️ “I have a great view from home.”
▪️ “Fall hike and La Cigale Ice Cream, anyone?”
▪️ “I have a great view from my apartment balcony on the fourteenth floor. I can see all the leaves I want to from the comfort of my own home.”
▪️ “The fall colours in the Ottawa area make for a beautiful day trip!”

JUST ANNOUNCED / NOW BOOKING
BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
We link to the Eganville Leader quite often, and we have mentioned that the 123 year-old newspaper is closing next February. Not because it’s not viable but because the pubisher has not found someone who will not ruin it, so he’s going out on his own terms.
This long piece by Andrew Duffy in the Ottawa Citizen is entitled ‘What it means to be a journalist: The Newspaper Life’ and he and Leader publisher reflect on a lifetime of newspapering. It’s worth the read.
