City staff will consider feedback received as part of the post-event debrief process to ensure any lessons learned are incorporated into future planning
– A statement by Ottawa’s emergency and protective services general manager Ryan Perraul after everyone got miffed about the secret fireworks show at LeBreton Flats last night, resulting in complaints from residents and City Councillors over the unexpected and unexplained noise.
Kitchissippi ward councillor Jeff Leiper says the City told him Canadian Heritage thought setting them off was the safest way to dismantle the fireworks, which were originally intended for Canada Day, and would be a welcome event for the patrons of Bluesfest, which was also being held at LeBreton Flats.
Bluesfest was told to not tell anyone about the fireworks, which were discharged following American country music star Cody Johnson's performance.

βͺ Residents in areas flooded out by the Canada Day storm are creeped out by looky-loos driving down their streets looking at the damage, or scavenging rain-soaked items left curbside.
βͺ Residents placed in shelters after their homes were damaged are appalled by the conditions of the City’s emergency accommodation. ‘"It kind of shows me why people would prefer to sleep in a place like Minto Park or Dundonald Park,’ one person said.
π The Stanley Cup was briefly in Ottawa yesterday. John Stanier, who works for this year’s top team, the Carolina Hurricanes as a video coordinator, brought it to his childhood home in Carp, West Carleton, to show off to his friends and family. Paul Schonfelder, the Hurricanes’ goalie coach, is also from Ottawa and is showing it to his people today. – Peter Szperling at CTV
π If you have a plan for renovating 24 Sussex Drive, the deadline for your application is August 15. So far sixteen firms have indicated their interest to fix up the old place. Acceptible firms must be Canadian and prove that they know how to pull off such a large project. – Josh Pringle at CTV Application Page
βͺ A petition is circulating to cease funding Stornaway, the residence of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.
πͺThe four Federal government coworking sites in Ottawa and Gatineau will be closed by September and converted to regular offices. The GCcoworking program allowed Federal workers from any department – mostly – come in and work on a first come, first served basis. The sites at 171 Bank Street, 335 River Road, 555 Legget Drive and 110 Place d’Orleans Drive at Place d’Orleans, and Promenade du Portage in Gatineau will be converted to dedicated use of specific departments. – Josh Pringle at CTV
βͺ The Department of National Defence has bought two industrial park properties at 1600 and 1630 Star Top Road. The Department had already been leasing them.
βͺ Applications for Federal public employee jobs has descreased 30 per cent in two years. In 2024, there were more than one million job applications to the Federal public service. Between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026, applications fell to 735,000.
π The new Ottawa swimming dock behind the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau has opened. The National Capital Commission has been on a tear creating new swimming locations in the Capital. This is the second one in 2026, joining the East Dock near the Ottawa Locks, which opened last month. – CBC Summer at the Capital Cottage
π¬ So long Sudbury. Porter Airlines is ending its Ottawa - Sudbury service September 7. Last May, Porter moved its Toronto - Sudbury route to Ottawa in an attempt to keep it viable but the airline says it did not lead to more passengers. Tiny outfit Propair, which uses 15 seat propeller planes, still flies Ottawa - Sudbury twice per week. – Jonathan Migneault at CBC

THE DAILY POLL
Have you gone swimming in the Ottawa River?
βͺοΈ “And they wonder why there’s more people living on the streets. Renoviction should be stopped.”
βͺοΈ “Boo f***ing-hoo* to landlords complaining here. If you're just using property as income stream, you're taking supply away from those who would rather have their own mortgage. Instead, somehow, I'm the middleman responsible for paying my landlord's mortgage?”
* THE OTTAWAN is not particularly prudish about bad words but we do wish to keep having a high delivery rate to people’s inboxes.
βͺοΈ “I think some landlords are just being greedy by renovicting tenants, doing some reno work. It’s just a way for them to implement huge rent increases at the expense of tenants.”
βͺοΈ “There are no good solutions here. Even installing air conditioning has caused people to be evicted so market rates could be charged. There’s no end in sight.”
βͺοΈ “Owning property that you can rent out is an investment and sometimes investments struggle. Making a buck off of people who need housing is gross even when they’re not being scammy.”
βͺοΈ “Being a renter for the last 6 years I am of the opinion that tenants need more rights not landlords! Landlords wouldn’t be in the rental business if they weren’t making $.”
βͺοΈ “100% yes , renters need protection from landlords that lie about who’s moving in or about renovations.”
βͺοΈ “How many ‘long term’ tenants are there that the landlord is supposedly losing money on? Very few and they are normally excellent low maintenance tenants.”
