WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🚆 The Ottawa Public Library had an increase in ‘incidents’ in 2024. The Library didn’t explain what an ‘incident’ meant this time but a 2023 report described ‘causing a disturbance’, ‘trespassing’ and ‘drug and alcohol use’. Together, the Rideau and Main branches had 54 per cent of the ‘incidents’. – Simon McKeown in the Ottawa Citizen
🐕 The Ottawa Humane Society hopes that people will sign its petition to ban puppy mills. While the Ontario government did pass an animal proection law last year, the Society says that there are still gaps to be filled:
- A provincial breeder registry
- Stronger socialization standards for puppies
- Transparent reporting where appropriate
- Clear enforcement tools
– Ottawa Humane Society The Petition
🔈 Paul Wells has an interview with Rockcliffe Park resident Pete Hoekstra, the United States ambassador to Canada. Hoekstra doesn’t talk about living in Ottawa, unfortunately, but it’s an interesting read nonetheless. – Paul Wells Substack

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
In the Kitchissippi Times, Dave Allston has a (Christmas) cracker of a story: ‘How Ottawa’s Christmas decor has evolved through time’.
One tidbit: Allston provides a photo of a tradition that THE OTTAWAN believes should be brought back today – Santa riding at the first Christmas Parade in 1896 atop a streetcar. It could be updated to the O Train, we think.
