OTTAWAN OF THE DAY
-
Mike Herzog
-
To enhearten his front line worker-wife during the early days of COVID 19, the Alta Vista resident mowed a heart in the path on the hydro corridor where she walked to work.
-
Five years later, Herzog maintains a 2.5 km path between the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre and Alta Vista Road for his neighbours to enjoy.
-
Now, his mowing is fundraising with Cuts 4 Cardiac Care, in hopes of raising $10,000 for the Ottawa Heart Institute.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🚧 It’s a perfect storm of traffic snarls as the Great Glebe Garage Sale meets Tamarack Race Weekend.
The Glebe Community Association details the street closures around the Glebe here – and note that the City didn’t coördinate with them.
Most of the major streets downtown will be closed Saturday and Sunday from as early as 5:00 am to 9:00 pm Saturday and 2:00 pm Sunday for the Tamarack Race Weekend.
↪ Canadian Olympians John Gay, Natasha Wodak, and Rory Linkletter have a live podcast, The Shakeout, dropping this evening for Tamarack fans.
🏒 A Stanley Cup semi finals watching party at the Slush Puppie Centre in Gatineau has been cancelled because of Sens TV rights. Although the Sens are no longer in contention for the Cup, the team did not give its approval to show the Montréal Canadians semi-final tomorrow. The Sens have exclusive TV rights over all National Hockey League games within 80 km. – Thomas Gerbet and Martin Comtois at Radio-Canada
🚰 Water fountains at the downtown headquarters of the Department of National Defence have been taken out of service because of asbestos. Unions representing staff say removal of the asbestos could take years. – Dylan Dyson at CTV
↪ Canada Revenue Agency employees have been told that they will be returning to the office four days per week by the end of July.
↪ Federal employees in Gatineau are saddened by the iminient closing of an official co-working space. Boulevard de la Cité will close next month after the lease ends.
💾 US Department of Justice and Ontario Provincial Police have charged a man over cybercrime. After searching an Ottawa home, the 23 year-old has been accused of ‘helping develop and operate Kimwolf, a botnet that — along with Aisuru — is responsible for hacking millions of devices and servers worldwide’. – Aedan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen
🏵️ Youth Ottawa is seeking nominations for its annual 21 Under 21 Youth Awards Gala. Nominees sought are ‘14-21 years of age who have made a significant contribution to their local or global community and who show initiative, enthusiasm, and leadership’. The awards were previously known as the Spirit of the Capital Awards. – Youth Ottawa

THE DAILY POLL
What type of person will you be this weekend?
▪️ “CBC Gem for the olympics and sports coverage.”
▪️ “How else can I reheat Heated Rivalry?!?”
▪️ “Mine is PBS.”
▪️ “We find a lot of stuff on Crave, and we use TiviMate to watch sports. CBC Gem was great for the Olympics. Prime has too many ads. Netflix is decent. The others are too $$$.”
▪️ “I had to choose Apple TV because there was no option to choose Dropout TV.”
▪️ “I got rid of Netflix and have never looked back. All kinds of good films and documentaries are available for free on CBC Gem or the Ottawa Public Library’s Kanopy. I don’t think enough people are aware.”
▪️ “I only subscribe to one of the listed ‘streamers’ the others I want are part of my TV package. Cheaper – probably not, but since this is important enough to rate a question here its likely a lot easier.”
▪️ “Really, how much TV, podcasts, streams can one possibly watch? I've got a life to live.”
▪️ “Heated Rivalry!!!”
▪️ “As I don’t have cable – and don’t pay for streaming, CBC Gem is my consistant service.”
▪️ “FuboTV and TennisTV.”
▪️ “Our favorites are actually BritBox and Acorn, both of which we access through Amazon Prime.”
▪️ “Netflix keeps me reeled in with great series or feature movies.”
▪️ “Cancelled all my American streaming cuz I refuse to support their state sanctioned bigotry & authoritarian rule.”
▪️ “Important to support Canadian commercial providers – so Crave and then CBC Gem.”
▪️ “It’s frustrating that I can’t get CBC Gem on my TV but when I connect to it it on my laptop, there are plenty of good shows and lots of intelligent info, especially with ‘About That’.”
▪️ “To clarify, I love the shows on Crave but the app is terrible!”
▪️ “What, no Britbox!”
▪️ “I subscribe only to CBC Gem to support local but for everything else ... it’s my Plex server. IYKYK.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
You may have heard that Natural Resources Canada has updated the plant hardiness map, showing that much of Canada has had an upgrade in plants that it can support.
Not Ottawa however, we’re still in Zone 5a.
For its part, the City of Ottawa is recommending residents create a rain garden to help direct water from creating puddles and go directly into the ground. If you live in the right areas, the City may have $2,500 for you.
Ottawa Public Health, however, is warning that all this wet weather is going to make 2026 a bad year for ticks.
At the University of Ottawa, the INSIGHT Lab is running the UPTick project to help understand ‘how urban landscapes affect human risk from Lyme and other tick-borne disease’. This year the study will be looking at ticks in Carp, Kanata North, Stonehaven, Findlay Creek and Blackburn Hamlet.
UPTick is also asking for your help: if you see a tick, take a photo and upload it to them.
