WEDNESDAY DRINKING + DINING UPDATE

Sammie of the Week

Follow the unusually welcoming sign to the 52 Antares strip mall and park quickly, so you can join the line-up snaking its way into 50 Two Sandwiches and More. It’s take-out only, open weekdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and the staff work like a well-oiled sandwich-crafting machine to get you in and out fast. We tried the Candied Club ($13, with plump chicken breast, sweet candied bacon, Cheddar, jalapeño lime aioli and tomato on a plump bun) and the Clubanino  ($12, with a mound of deli turkey slices slices, bacon, Cheddar, and tomato, to which we added some crispy lettuce and a slick of honey mustard, all within a flavourful Italian herb bun). Both were hefty, tasty, and value for money (you ccould stretch each sandwich to two meals) but the Clubanino edged out the celebrated Candied Club if only for the sweet and zingy honey mustard, which catapulted the humble deli sammie into the next level.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

⛸️ Tonight is your last chance to skate on the Rideau this season.  It has been a fantastic 56 days but, at 10:00 pm, the National Capital Commission is calling it a season. – Ottawa Citizen

A flood watch has been announced for homes in North Gower by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, due to melting ice.

🛏️ The 96 year-old O’Brien House on Meech Lake has been leased out as a boutique hotel by the National Capital Commission. The mansion, built for Montréal Canadiens founder John Ambrose O’Brien, has been empty since 2019. The new operator is Square Old Chelsea, which operates a collection of businesses nearby.  – Liam Baker at CBC

🧳 Ottawa Tourism has announced a nightlife tourism development fund. Applications will be accepted for projects that attract visitors and enhance Ottawa’s nighttime appeal between 6:00 pm – 6:00 am. Deadline for applications is March 31.  – Ottawa Tourism

🎣Some details of the proposed early retirement incentive for Federal public employees have been released. If the offer receives Parliamentary approval, early retirees would not pay the five per cent penalty on each year taken early, as is currently the case. Employees will have to make their decision this year.  – Matteo Cimellaro in the Ottawa Citizen    Federal government portal

🚌 A new bus route has begun between Ottawa – Toronto – London corridor. Flixbus service began last Sunday, and also stops in Kitchener, Cambridge, Peterborough, Madoc, Perth, and Kanata. The trip is a quick 10 hours.  – Brian Williams in the London Free Press

↪ We can all agree that we know which London we are talking about, right?

THE DAILY POLL

🔘 I took an OC Transpo bus and it took me way out of my way. Does that count?

  • Previously in ottawan polls:

  • We asked, ‘Were you a fan of Corel’s software?’

    • 4% I loved Corel Draw

    • 39% I loved WordPerfect

    • 8% I had no idea Parallels was Corel and I use it now

    • 10% I still use Corel Draw or Wordperfect

    • 39% I just liked the rock and roll atmosphere Michael Cowpland engendered in the 80s and 90s

    •
      Commentary

▪️ Back in 2002 or so, I chose PaintShopPro over Photoshop, and I have had zero regrets.

▪️ Imagine a world in which we all use WordPerfect as a standard instead of Microsoft Word. I want to live there!!

▪️ I know I’m showing my age, but I loved WordPerfect. When the government changed providers and Word was introduced I was not a happy camper, but I’ve adjusted.

▪️ Does anyone really use WordPerfect anymore?

▪️ “Nailed down soooo many jobs with this one skill.

▪️ Rock and roll for sure! Who can forget his wife, Marlen, in her black leather, gold breastplate, and diamond nipple cat suit?!

▪️ I didn’t know WordPerfect was still a thing.

▪️ WordPerfect was much better than Word ... especially the ability to see all the commands.

▪️ WordPerfect was just that – perfect! Miles ahead of all the other programs back then.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Faces magazine cannot publish a story with the title ‘5 Famous Ottawa pets’ and expect us to ignore it. The famous five are: Crusoe the Dachshund, with whom THE OTTAWAN is unfamiliar, Smudge the Cat, whose meme of ‘woman yelling at cat’ we definitely have seen, Sir George the St. Bernard, an iconic local hero, Ed the Cat, who was in a TikTok video, and Biggie Smalls, a cat who was rescued at 43 lbs and inspired the creation of Big House Sanctuary and Rehab
