WHAT’S GOING ON AT CITY HALL
Ottawa Police Service Board Policy and Governance Committee
Friday, November 14 at 10:00 am- Investigations and Reports Under Section 81 of the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019
- CSPA Update: Policies Le-001 Community Patrol, LE-003 Crime, Call and Public Disorder Analysis

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🪖 The Department of Defence is hoping that Federal public employees will bolster the reserves to 300,000 members. Although she is now walking the idea back a bit, Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan was working on a plan to train public employees to handle firearms, drive trucks and fly drones in case of mobilization of the supplementary reserves. – David Pugliese in the Ottawa Citizen
🫰 Why not make a financial donation to the City, asks the City? On the draft budget page of the website, the City has added a link to the ‘City of Ottawa Contribution Program’, asking residents to donate $5 to $25,000 to support programs and services. In most cases, it will be tax deductable. – City of Ottawa Contribution Program
↪ Ottawa Police Service says it needs a 5 per cent increase in its budget – $26.1 million – because its crime clearance rate is dropping. ‘Crime clearance’, a term of art which means crimes that are reported and result in a charge, is now 26 per cent (as of 2024), the second lowest in Ontario’s 12th largest municipalities.
🗑️ The City is considering buying a private landfill at the intersection of Highway 417 and Boundary Road. The Capital Region Resource Recovery Centre is 475 acres and already pre-approved to accept 450,000 tonnes of waste annually. The landfill is coöwned by the Taggart development people, and no purchase price has been mentioned. The City’s current landfill, Trail Road, is expected to have 10 to 15 years of life left in it. – Josh Pringle at CTV

THE DAILY POLL
Will you be making a donation to the City of Ottawa?
🔘 Yes, funding needed services by donation is much more fair than by taxation
🔘 No, if they City needs the funds it probably should collect it in taxes or fees
🔘 It’s only fair that property owners get cut a break with money from my hard work

Previously in ottawan polls: -
We asked, ‘What do you think of a 2.5% increase in transit fares?’
-
Commentary
▪️ “They just increased it! And we’re in an affordability crisis??”
▪️ “Mediocre Mark thought OSEG was a more deserving recipient of citizens money rather than transit.”
▪️ “There are municipalities that have made transit free as helps the disadvantaged and reduces traffic. What’s cheaper, free transit or expensive road construction?”
▪️ “If you want people to use transit, it must be affordable.”
▪️ “Public transit is a service, not a profitable program. The more we try to push costs onto consumers, the less useful the service becomes. Which is, of course, exactly what Sutcliffe wants.”
▪️ “The cost of transit has far outpaced inflation. It used to be convenient, affordable, and reliable. It is no longer affordable or reliable, and contracture of bus and train runs is decreasing convenience. What’s the cost increase getting me?”
▪️ “Demand for the service will not increase with a fare increase. It needs to be more affordable, not less.”
▪️ “Current city leadership seems to have a knack for making the worst possible choice at every turn.”
▪️ “I live not far from work but not close enough to walk. As it stands now driving and parking is comparable to taking the lrt.”
▪️ “My husband and I are infrequent transit users. Even at current rates, a round trip for 2 is $16.00. Parking, even downtown, is usually less than that for 2 or 3 hours. Plus transit takes double the time. We need more buses!”
▪️ “No train service just after 1st snowfall ... no explanation at Tunney’s pasture ... no R1 buses ... horrible service. How dare they ask for more without giving what was promised.”
▪️ “Each time Ottawans see these types of increases, it is time to remind themselves which councillors voted ‘yes’ to spend $440 million on a smaller arena and north side stands at Lansdowne.”
▪️ “Transit should be free.”
▪️ “Prices keep going up while service keeps getting worse. With recent changes, the closest stop to my house is now 1 km away (and I don’t even live in the suburbs), which resulted in decreasing my use of public transit.”
▪️ “It’s time to make public transit both reliable and free. It’s an essential service, the same as public education, Fire Department, and Police Services.”
▪️ “The police can definitely do without that extra 5%. It should go to transit improvement and *decreasing* the fare to stop OC transpo’s death spiral from service that gets simultaneously more expensive and worse every year.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
Tobias Lütke, the chief executive officer of local mom and pop business Shopify, is number four on Maclean’s 2025 rich list. Lütke, of course, abandoned Ottawa for Toronto a few years ago but we’re not going to let go of him that easily. It’s estimated he is worth $19.1 billion.
At number 37, the Lalji family from Vancouver with a mere $5 billion is also worth mentioning as they own the Château Laurier.
