WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

❓ A reporter in Smiths Falls had a question and answer session with the Ontario Provincial Police about the property where three bodies have been found. It’s interesting to read because it asks the questions that you want answered, such as ‘what are the connections?’, but unfortunately the Police are keeping the information close to their vest. – Hollie Pratt-Campbell in The Lanarkist

🚨 A Kanata mom alleges that an Uber Eats driver left her daughter candy from ‘a secret admirer’. The mother says that on a sleepover, the daughter ordered food from Uber Eats after midnight using a kids money app without her knowledge. She alleges that later that night, a bag of candy from the daughter’s secret admirer was left on the doorstep. Two weeks later, another package was left, this time with a phone number. Uber says the delivery person has had their access to their system removed.  – Katie Griffin at CTV

🚍 Every week, @stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. This week, we highlights broccoli crowns ($1.37 each at Basics), eggs ($4.88/18 pack at Independent and Loblaws), and boneless pork chops ($2.96/lb at Basics).  – /Ottawa

🏎️ Starting today, you can now drive up to 110 km/h on some local freeways.

  • On the Queensway between the junctions of Highway 416 and Highway 7.
  • Highway 7 from the Queensway to Carleton Place.
  • Highway 417 from Leitrim Road to Ottawa Regional Road 174

– Ministry of Transportation

THE DAILY POLL

How often do you use food delivery apps?

🔘 Daily, or pretty close to it

🔘 Weekly

🔘 Monthly

🔘 I have never used one

🔘 Pizza and Chinese food were the only deliveries available to my parents, and frankly, we should go back to that

  • Previously in OTTAWAN polls:

  • Will you be buying any US wine or spirits?

    • 6% Yes. I was supportive of the boycott but if our countries have a deal, then job done

    • 5% Yes. I was not in favour of taking them off the shelves in the first place

    • 72% No, I understand returning them to the shelves is part of a larger trade agreement between Canada and the US but I’m still mad

    • 12% My booze worldview has now expanded and US wine and spirts have taken a back seat to new favourites

    • 5% I only home-brew beer and make bathtub gin

Commentary

▪️ “We’ve known for decades that the US are an imperialistic, predatory country, so I’ll continue to do what I’ve always done: stay away from their products as much as possible.”

▪️ “You can vote with your wallet, but don't tell me who I can vote for!”

▪️ “Not a chance.”

▪️ “Refusing to buy American (when possible) is the only thing we can do to express our feelings towards the current US administration.”

▪️ “Honestly, eff the Americans and all their products. I don’t even want to think about them anymore.”

▪️ “Nope I will continue to boycott all US products, including booze, wherever possible as long as orange man is still in power and threatening us! We need to support local and Canadian businesses.”

▪️ “WE DON'T NEED CALIFORNIAN REDS. WE NEED BC REDS (and whites and rosés).”

▪️ “Hopefully even if the booze goes back onto the shelves, Canadians will still boycott the US products. I know I will.”

▪️ “Should have had an option like: I no longer drink alcohol or I don’t drink! But if I did, I would still not buy anything US at this point. Maybe when the Dictator is out of the Whitehouse, I might buy US!”

▪️ “I used to like California wines – no more – will never go back. US alcohol is a no go for me. Case closed.”

▪️ “I will continue not buying any food, wine or spirits from the USA.”

▪️ “Plenty of choices from all around the world so why buy from a country that is bullying us.”

▪️ “If putting it back on shelves to get a better tariff for all, it’s a decision ALL Canadians can make. Booze from other countries and ours can satisfy our needs. Just don’t buy it.”

▪️ “No problem in putting US Booze back on the shelves but we need to continue to buy Canadian and not US.”

▪️ “I will still be boycotting US wines and spirits. There are excellent gins and vodkas one can buy locally: Top Shelf, King’s Lock, etc. I also prefer non-US wines (Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, France).”

▪️ “No if I want water, I'll drink it from the tap OHH BURN!!N!N!N!!”

▪️ “Not a chance, there’s a world of alternate choices to tickle the palate.”

▪️ “I started boycotting during his first term and I’m not going to stop now. Canadian beer, wine and liquor are far superior anyway.”

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Tara Deschamps at the Canadian Press has a rip roaring tale on  ‘How a little known government agency helped crack Canada's biggest art fraud’

The little known agency is the Canadian Conservation Institute, a Special Operating Agency within the Department of Canadian Heritage on Innes Road.

The fraud was the faking of thousands of works attributed to Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau. The Institute had found 1,000 fakes so far – but the number out there may be closer to 6,000.
