Whose flag is flying at City Hall today? Paraguay

City Hall flies the flag of embassies and high commissions on their national days.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💸 City Councillors vote to keep their ‘slush fund’ despite auditor general’s disapproval. The so called ‘slush fund’ is the money that developers pay to the City in lieu of providing land for parks. Recreation staff is supposed to select projects on which to spend the money, with ward councillor input, but Nathalie Gougeon says that in practice councillors make the decisions. The proposal that was voted down was a guarantee that recreation staff had the final word.    – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

🚊In a quick win for OC Transpo’s new general manager, some two carriage combos returned to O Train Line 1 today. Trains had been running with only one car since January due to the axle assemble issues and were not expected to return to normal service until June. But in a surprise announcement, some two car trains began operating today. – CBC

🎧 The Night Mayor’s office has dropped a new podcast, Ottawa at Night. The first episode features performer Remi Royale, singer and musician Yolande Laroche, and Ottawa’s poet laureate David O’Meara. Night Mayor Mathieu Grondin isn’t the host – a rotating cast from his office does the honours – but he will be a guest on an upcoming show. The episode was recorded at new hifi cocktail bar Fono. – City of Ottawa  Listen at THE OTTAWAN’s podcast list

💰Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says the NATO defence bank could add 3,500 jobs to Ottawa. While Canada has been announced as headquarters for the new bank, the city has not been determined. Premier Doug Ford wants it in Toronto but Sutcliffe says Ottawa’s bid is ‘part of a broader plan to mitigate the economic impact of federal public service job cuts’. – Ben Andrews in the Ottawa Citizen

🗳️ Ottawa Charged Up

The CBC says, ‘Stage is set for the PWHL's 1st all-Canadian Walter Cup final’ while ‘PWHL’s 1st all-Canadian final could boost girls’ participation in sport: advocates’, says Global News.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s nice to to have a hockey championship with Canadian teams in it – but this is only the third ever finalé for the Professional Women’s Hockey Team. Almost every match will be a first for something.

More than anything, it’s a historic match because it’s the first Walter Cup in which Minnesota Frost isn’t playing.

The first best-of-three match is tonight in Laval.

THE DAILY POLL

How are you feeling about the new OC Transpo general manager?

🔘 I feel like he is a go-getter and things are going to turn around

🔘 I think the new boss is same as the old boss and I won’t get fooled again

🔘 He lucked out. Transit staff have been working on fixing things for months before he got here

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Yesterday, the police department of the City of Gatineau proudly announced a new logo, replacing the one below.

with this one ...

but then some people noticed that the bird part of the logo is used as an example of minimal logo design on the Adobe photoshop blog.

Further, that bird is also used on the logo for an air cargo consulting company in Miami called Air Jet International.

Gatineau police say that the city’s communications department created the logo, which was selected by police staff from two options, and that it will return to the old logo.

The department did not say what a bird had to do with Gatineau.
