WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
🪓 The Royal Canadian Geographical Society has purchased Monty Python’s ‘I’m a lumberjack’ song costumes. The costumes, which were used in a 2009 performance by the Pythons, were purchased using $6,400 from a donor with an interest in the fine arts. You can soon see the costumes at the Society’s HQ on Sussex Drive. – Laura Byrne Paquet in Ottawa Road Trips
↪ And we’ll sing ... sing ... sing ...
🚊 OC Transpo is planning earlier start times for Line 2 Monday to Saturday. If it happens, the first train from Bayview station will leave at 5:45 am weekdays, compared to 6:00 am now. On Saturdays, the first train would leave Limebank at 6:13 am instead of the current 6:30 am. – Josh Pringle at CTV
🦽 The sidewalk haters in Manor Park have won the day. As part of a replacement of sewer and water pipes in Manor Park, the City had proposed adding new sidewalks. A groundswell of opposition arose from residents who believe that sidewalks will ruin the character of the neighbourhood. Rideau-Rockcliffe ward councillor Rawlson King says the plan has now been deferred. – Ben Andrews at CBC
💰 The City is installing garbage, recycling, and organic waste bins in 300 parks. The 360 litre bins are part of the City’s plans to extend the life of the Trail Road landfill. The City operates over 1,300 parks. – Josh Pringle at CTV

THE DAILY POLL
Should City Councillors get a pay raise after the next election?
-
Previously in ottawan polls:

-
15% Yes, it’s an investment in our city
-
40% No, let private companies fund their own ventures
-
5% Yes, because of what we have seen at Lansdowne
-
40% No, because of what we have seen at Lansdowne

Commentary
▪️ “If billionaires want public funding to support their business, the public should get a share of their profits.”
▪️ “Not one dime of taxpayers’ money.”
▪️ “NO! A thousand times NO! If they can't afford to operate their business, they should get out of it. How many Ottawa residents can afford to attend sports games? But the teams think we should all contribute to their cost??”
▪️ “I'm in favour of limited city financial support in line with benefits the city receives, but the majority should be funded by private companies.”
▪️ “Come on, Lansdowne is nothing but a cash cow for the developers and a drain for Ottawa. So definitely not! We should not support another rich sports team. ”
▪️ “Any public financial input is indirectly contributing to the huge salaries players take home. While we have municipal needs like affordable housing, we would effectively be transferring wealth to millionaire athletes.”
▪️ “Fool me once …”
▪️ “We have too many other priorities in the city to spend money on.”
▪️ “Focus on city services, not private ventures.”
▪️ “They say it’ll come from the city and not taxpayers. Where does the city get its money? I doubt the feds or province will want anything to do with it, so that leaves …”
▪️ “No public money for private enterprises owned by the 1%.”
▪️ “Maybe have an ‘add on’ to everybody’s tax bill asking them if they would like to contribute a little to the fund … their choice …. believe or not some people don’t watch hockey :)”
▪️ “These owners are rich enough. There’s no reason they can’t use their money to pay for something they’ll benefit the most from.”
▪️ “My city taxes should not be paying for any construction of this type.”
▪️ “The team owners should always be the ones to carry the biggest burden of the cost but there is a benefit to the greater local economy when a stadium like that goes in and so having the city and province kick in some investment is a good thing.”
▪️ “I like what they've done at Lansdowne so far, but I feel they're about to mess it up by taking a step backwards with a smaller arena.”

MADE IN CANADA DEALS OF THE DAY

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...
-
Eighty years ago last weekend, a clerk at the Soviet embassy said good night to his colleagues, stuffed 109 secret dossiers under his shirt, and made his way over to the offices of the Ottawa Journal on Queen Street.
-
However, the Journal’s night editor couldn’t understand Gouzenko’s thick accent and told him to try the Mounties. Instead, Gouzenko took the dossiers home and tried again the next morning to get various government departments interested. They were not.
-
Eventually, the Soviet embassy noticed their clerk was missing and ransacked his Somerset Street apartment. The Mounties were now interested, and Gouzenko and his wife were permitted to defect to Canada.
-
Igor Gouzenko’s dossiers proved that Soviet spies had penetrated the Canadian government and, by the way, the Soviet Union had an atomic bomb.
